emily25's fantastic journey into orthodontics(update pg10!!)
Hi everyone! im new on here.I will start by telling you a bit about myself.Im a 25yr old busy mum and a full time student.
Ive always been happy with myself and confident untill 5 years ago when a few nasty throw away comments made me become totally obssesed with my appearance.
i started noticing things about myself that i had not payed much attention to before.
Ive always been uncomfortable with my teeth and didnt feel comfortable with smiling, but over the last couple of years i have become obssesed with my teeth.
I hate them and have become so self consious that i have developed a extreme social phobia, when i go out im convinsed everyone is just looking at my teeth its horrible. People definatly treat me like im stupid because of them.
Anyway i finally have decided to get them fixed. Ive had one consultation with the orthodontist, she said i have an overjet of 7mm and a cross bite. She also said i need four extractions. She also noted that my lower jaw is set back.Does anyone know why i need to have four teeth removed? will this fix my overjet ? because im concerned that i may need jaw surgery but the ortho didnt mention it. can a overjet really be fixed with just braces and without surgery? also whats the difference between a overbite and a overjet? anyway i have a appointment for tommorow to get my xrays and impressions done. im excited about getting my braces but apprehensive too. i will be posting regularly on here and any comments would be much appreciated xxx

Hello.
Welcome to the site. I think many people on here have experienced the same "social phobia" due to their teeth. Concerning the extractions, they can fix overcrowding and overbites i think. Ive had four extractions and its to fix my overcrowding. How long is your expected treatment? How do you feel about getting braces? As a male in the uk i find that other males with braces are of the ages of 16 and under.
Hope it all goes well for you mate.

hi everyone sorry for the delay in post, what with christmas and all.Anyway i got my letter for my treatment plan. It said that i definatly need 4 teeth extracted, 1 from each corner. It also said that i will have fixed appliances on top and bottom, not sure which type yet though i guess im just happy to go with the flow. My total treatment time will be about 15 months after which i will have to wear retrainers. The whole thing is costing me 2000 gbp, but its worth every bit of money. my ortho ms. edwards said she thinks she will get good results from me lol, not sure if she ment my teeth or from the money in my pocket!
Anyway ive got an appointment with my dentist next thursday just to check with him that hes ok with them teeth coming out then i shall book up my dreaded extractions. I also have an otrtho appointment on the 29th of jan for consultation etc then i get my braces fixed on on the 5th of feb. It seems like such a long way off, anyway i shall post some pics of my teeth tommorow after i work out how lol.
Believe me they are not a pretty sight. I got a sonicare electric tooth brush for christmas ready for when i get my braces on. OMG!!! im just trying to get to grips with it the first time i used it i spayed toothpaste absolutely everywhere, my boyf thought it had been snowing inside lol.
The things we go through eh! but i wouldnt have it any other way.
Im glad im going through hardship to get straight teeth because i will appreciate my teeth more, im just taking it all as a lesson to look after my teeth.

Hi Emily
Just caught your story now. I'm a 42 mum with a brace. Just wanted to let you know that I am so pleased with the results I have seen so far. I also have an overjet and had two extractions (I had a previous extraction as a teenager which threw my mouth off to the left).
It's good that you're getting this done aged 25, it will be a real boost for you. I liked your joke about the ortho getting good results for you and the money.
I'm sorry that comments made you feel bad about your teeth, that is terrible. When you have lovely teeth at the end of this you hopefully won't be able to stop smiling. I never even realised just how bad my teeth were until I started this whole brace trip, I never really analysed them before although I never liked them. I just made sure they were clean. It's amazing what those wires and brackets can do, I wouldn't have believed I would see so much progress in such a short time.
Good luck with your extractions and dentist trips. February will be here before you know it.
Regards
Joney

hi everyone. Not feeling very great today. very depressed.
I went to the dentist on thursday to talk about my 4 extractions that i have to have.
Anyway i went to find out that my own dentist has left and gone back to sweden and that i have a new dentist. I havent even met him and he is going to be taking my teeth out. I like my old dentist hes was really good with my dental phobia.
It might not be a big deal to anyone on here but this is to me.It was bad enough that i have to have my teeth out but to have a different dentist.
Im terrified. i dont trust ppl easily and im having the first two out on tuesday. I know im being a baby. i just dont feel i can cope with this anymore.
My dental phobia is what caused my teeth to be so bad I just need someone to tell me that having teeth pulled out isnt so bad and that i can get through it.

Hi Emily! Congrats on taking the decision to go ahead with braces.
I've only just started the journey, and like many others have said here, I know I'm doing the right thing. I can totally understand your fear over the extractions, as I needed 4 extractions too, and then the 4 wisdom teeth have to come out at some point also, so 8 in all
The good news is that I've had 3 extractions already (2 premolars, and 1 wisdom tooth), and it was absolutely fine. My dentist was new too, as I had moved homes (to another country actually, so big change!), but the dentist was very understanding and patient. I think that most dentists realise that extractions, as an adult, are quite a big deal psychologically. After all, the teeth won't grow back, so we're bound to be uptight/worried that it's the right thing to do. If you're in any doubt, I think KK's advice is very sound - make sure you get a few consultations to see if the orthos agree that extractions are necessary. In the 10 years building up to the start of my treatment (took me that long to go for it!), I had about 4 different consults, and they all said I needed the 4 premolar extractions because of overcrowding. Given they all agreeed, I felt totally comfortable that it was the right decision. Check with your ortho why the extractions are necessary. I simply have (had!) too many teeth for my arch/jaw. As an adult, the teeth respond just as well to orthodontic treatment as those of a child, in terms of the way they move. However what is different is that unlike a child, the jaw has stopped growing, and this is why in the case of overcrowding extractions are sometimes needed, since it's the only way to make room.
Perhaps you could ring your new dentist on Monday and tell him of your concerns. Maybe you could chat to him over the phone about the procedure, so that you know what to expect. My extractions were completely painless due to a generous dose of anaesthetic, and were very fast really. For the wisdom tooth, I didn;t even realise he'd taken it out!
I hope it all goes well - don't be afraid to ask questions to your ortho & your new dentist, as you'll want to go in feeling you're doing the right thing. I get my top brace on wednesday (finally!!!) so we can compare how things went.
Good luck and keep us posted

Although I do not have a dental phobia, I do suffer from anxiety and panic attacks. What's important is to discuss your fears with your dentist before the appointment. Dentists and their staff deal with nervous patients every day and are well trained to do so.
Before my extractions, I had discussed my fears beforehand over the phone. Also, when I booked my appointment, I chose a time of day when the office is not so busy and scheduled extra time just in case.
When the actual extraction day came, the procedure went well, no problems and even better still: no panic attacks. I was back to work shortly after. The waiting was worst than the extractions themselves. Hope your extractions go well. Good luck.

Thanks eveyone for your encouraging messages
you all gave me the courage to go through with it.
Here i am sitting here with two holes in my gums.My gums are sore and tender but i can handle that.It really wasnt as bad as i thought it was going to be, even if i did have a slight panic attack ive lived to tell the tale.
Well two down, two to go!
