My braces journey actually began about a year and 3 months ago. At 18 years old I decided to get braces because my parents had awesome dental coverage and it would all be paid for. I knew that people would probably be wierd about it but I figured it was the last chance I'd get to have straight teeth for free. I decided to do it! On January 6th I had these pictures taken of what my teeth looked like before braces:
They said that my upper arch wasn't big enough for all my teeth and they'd have to do expansion as well as the possibility of some teeth being extracted. They also said I had a cross bite and an overbite which would have to be fixed. I was looking at a treatment of about 20 months, but it might take longer. I got my braces on the following week, but no wire on top because I had to get an expander. When I first got my braces I was devestated. I hated how they looked and I felt trapped, like I couldn't go back. I actually cried in the dentists office! Can you imagine all these little kids getting braces without being fazed and a nearly 19 year old sitting there crying in the dentist chair? It was very embaressing but I couldn't help it. I was so sad! Within the next couple of weeks with help from family, co-workers, and my boyfriend who was VERY supportive, I started to get used to the braces. I was a bit disapointed however with my best friend who hasn't really made this whole ordeal any easier. She has instead made discouraging comments about my teeth as they have progressed through treatement. For example, when I got my expander and I got the gap in the front she said, "Oh my god you look so creepy!". Anyways, I went on to get my expander which was just the most horrible thing in the world! I couldn't talk properly which was the most embaressing thing. That lasted for about 4 months and they took it out (which was by the way a very painfull experience!). Now, I am in my 15th month of treatement and they think I will have my braces off sometime within September. I'll be posting pics of how my teeth are currently within the next couple of days!
Some pics of how my teeth look now after 16 months!
They aren't very good quality but you get the idea!
I have my next adjustment in 3 weeks. I am a little freaked out about how my teeth are coming along. The main thing that is bothering me is that the progress seems to have slowed significantly and also 4 of my lower teeth seem to be flaring out. I have tried to discuss this with my dentist but he is always in a rush and just acts like I am annoying him. I think I will have to mention something politely next time that I am a little worried. What do you think? What's a polite but effective way to get his attention and not just brush me off?
Thanks KK! I called my ortho today and made an appointment to sit down and talk with him. I just said that I had some concerns over how my teeth were coming along. I have my adjustment on the 31st of May and then the appointment on the 8th of June. I really hope I can get all my questions answered!
