A series of unfortunate events (Pics 10/28)

#1 Post by RobK »

Two weeks since I was braced.

The story thus far:

Monday September 22 - Brace day :-#)
AND "By the way, you have a tumor in your mandible" day

Friday September 26 - "I think the tumor is benign, and it is right behind the mental nerve foramen, if I perform the biopsy, I will damage the nerve." Therefore, you are free to go. (Hooray!!!)

Tuesday 9/30 - Extraction consultation with my general dentist. Two hours.

Friday 10/3 - Extraction of four premolars under local anesthetic. 45 minutes.

Later on that same day, I nearly drowned. I tried to fall asleep, and I think I must have succeeded. Blood ran down my throat. I tried to cough, but there was no exit, my dentist had been exceedingly thorough packing my mouth. It was too tight to push out with my tongue (I suppose, I didn't really know where the little bugger was). I couldn't even pull it out since my dentist took care to hook the gauze on my arch wire.

Saturday 10/4 - Went to work and no major problems

Sunday 10/5 - I woke up at 2 am feeling like someone hit me in the jaw with a hammer. The sharp end, not the mallet end. I ran to the bathroom so that I could see what the hell was wrong. I noticed that my sockets did not look "right." There was no red blood clot. Just this white stuff in the top sockets and nothing but a small white thing on the bottom.

I swished with salt water and used a Q tip to pack the hole with orajel. That provided some relief initially, but I intermittently felt that all Sunday and last night.

Monday 10/6 - I woke up early this morning and went to the dentist so that I could get some relief. The sockets were irrigated and my suspicions were confirmed.

I went to school.

Now I am at work. My dentist wanted me to come in for an adjustment 10 days after I had my extractions, but now I suppose that I will have to wait longer. I was hoping that I can be like some of you and have some noticeable changes in the first six weeks or so, but no dice.

Either way, I m still very excited about having braces, but I hope that the next feel weeks are a lot less exciting then these past few weeks.
I can deal with not being able to eat and having my lips get caught on my braces, but all of this worry and bluster takes a toll. And it takes a lot of time. I’m in my second year of medical school and that is a rare commodity. I can handle going to the orthodontist every six weeks. But this is a bit much.

Anybody else have drysocket with braces on? How did you take care of everything?

Talking about tooth movement to people with braces is like talking to a woman about her first born child.
Yes, there has been movement.
Yes, that is by far the cutest baby I have ever seen.

I suppose I should mention why I'm here.

I always knew that my teeth were crooked. In the past year, I realized that I was getting old (approaching the big 25), and at my parents' urging, I began going on consultations for invisalign. Unfortunately, I was told by several orthodontists that I wasn't a good candidate for invisalign. I was disappointed, of course, but listening to them critique my smile made me realize that my teeth could not continue as they were. Braces were no longer optional.

I was really nervous about getting braces. I didn't know if they would interfere with my schedule. I didn't know how I would be perceived by my patients and colleagues. I didn't know if it would have been better to wait. I was just unsure about a lot of things.

Reading the boards has given my the confidence to go ahead and get all of this over with now. Just think, in two more years, I will be doing what I have always wanted to do, and with the beautiful smile that I have always wanted to have.

Well, that's all I have to say for now. I have pics, but I think I will wait until I have had my first adjustment before I post them. That way, I can inspire myself.

1st Adjustment today!

#3 Post by RobK »

Well I had my first adjustment today. My ortho seems optimistic that I'll have some excellent progress in these next four weeks. I hope so. I am so energized by the progress that I've had so far and I only had the 6 front teeth braced! Now that there are spaces to take advantage of, I hope that I to reduce some of this flaring.

Thanks for your support.

Hi...

Your story sounds pretty scary, but I think you have the right idea. Look to the future, thats the only way to be...

Theres always a few bumps in the road, and hopefully we can overcome them and come out the other end tougher.

Oz Kelly and Meryaten thanks for your support.

I may have been a bit of a drama queen initially

Things seemed so drama-filled in the beginning, but now real life has put braces drama on the back burner (for now ...)

Anyway, I am so excited about my progress thus far. I'll be really excited for elastics once I get those puppies in. (Is that weird?)

Here are some pics ...

I think everyone is a bit of a drama queen when getting braces, especially adults.

I still have to have 2 premolars extracted...not looking forward to that. :(

I'm strangely excited about elastics as well. I guess I see them as the step towards real progress.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!
