vector's journey

#1 Post by vector »

Well I had my second consult today where they outlined my treatment
plan. They want to use a Greenfield lingual distalizer to pull my
top teeth back. I have a deep bite with a cross bite. The ortho said
that individually the top teeth and bottom teeth didn't look to bad, it's
just that when you put them together the bite dose not line up good.

Anyway after the consult I wrote a check for 20% down on the total
treatment cost and they said that I could get started today. So why
wait. Spacers in and the top front 6 bonded and wired with ceramic
brackets. Feels kind of funny but not to bad. On December 10th
the rest of the hardware goes in.

Well I made it through the first week at work. These ceramic brackets
are great. Nobody notices them :P My Denta Kit arrived yesterday
so I have my essential supplies now. Flossing is a pain but I'm getting
a routine down now.

I've got light blue ligs on and all of the coffee I drink has all ready stained
them to the same color as the brackets. The only problem I've have is
with a spacer, or lack of a spacer. When the spacers went in one would
not fit because by teeth were so tight so they inserted a wire between
the tight teeth and twisted it up to force a space. Naturally the wire
protrudes and irritates my cheek. Nothing a little wax can't fix.

Nine days to go before the distalizer goes in. I checked this sucker out on
the web and it looks like it is going to add at least 10 minutes to my
flossing routine. I suspect that before this type of distalizer was
developed the only other way of pulling my molars back would be with
head gear. I'll take the distalizer over head gear any day.

Time for some pictures.

Here's the deep bite-

And here's the cross bite-

And here's a picture I found on the web of the Greenfield molar distalizor
that's getting installed on the 10th. Note that mine won't have the
expander.-

Just got back from the ortho. They had trouble fitting the bands because
my teeth are too tight still. The bands stayed on long enough to do an
impression of the top of my mouth to send to the lab so they can fab
the distalator. Since I have this deep bite the lower braces could not
go on at this time because I'd wind up biting them off.

So, spacers back in, fresh ligs and the next appointment is on December
27th to install the distalator (with built in bite plate, yea).

The lower braces are scheduled to go on January 18th.

Trip four to the ortho today. They installed the Greenfield molar distalizer
with a built in bite plate to open my deep bite. The distalizer part pulls
the top molars back to fix the over bite.

Went right back to work after getting this installed and my coworkers
were understanding about my inability to speak properly. One thought I
had teeth pulled again. Anyway This speech impediment thing is annoying.

The ortho tech also put bands on the lower second molars in preparation for
the January 18th appointment to put the lower braces on. These have
hooks on them along with the upper canine brackets so it looks like
elastics are in my future.

Oh well just plunge blindly forward.

Trip five to the orto today. Got metal braces installed on the bottom,
now finally all of the hardware is installed. Only 16 to 21 or so months to
go now.

The next appointment is March 28th. The doc said that I could go so long
between appointments because there was nothing else to do until the
appliance pushes my top molars back.

Just got back from trip number 6 to the orthodontist. They're happy with the way my molars are moving, the doc said in a couple of more visits the Greenfield appliance can be removed. I went for black ligs this time.

Got a power chain installed on the lower front 6 teeth and an elastic on the left side I think to get the midline moving in the right direction. The elastic goes from top left canine to bottom left canine to lower left rear molar.

Elastic specification- Komodo Dragon, 3/16", 2-1/2 oz., #102.

Good news ! THe doc said that the distalizer/bite plate combo comes out on the next visit in 6 weeks :) Other than that just got fresh black ligs in the same configuration. Single rubber band on the left side is also the same.
