Maybe some diction phrases .. I am a radio DJ and I know your pain. I just talk A LOT all day long. Even if I am talking to myself. Just try to read loud something and speak slower. A slower pace can help you focus more on the correct diction and the way to achieve it. I improved my speech a lot these days and I don't sound as a "braces girl" anymore ...

Welcome to the community and to the braced group :)

The Shelly (Stan's sister) sound will go away. I had it bad and I was working with executives, talking to them face to face and tons of over the phone. Numbers were extremely difficult and I hated hearing myself. When I first got braced, people were asking why I was talking like I had a lisp. Now that my mouth is used to the stuff, it's not noticable when I am speaking. Just keep hydrated, dry mouth tends to get all caught and make your mouth do funny thigs.

Just an update. This is day four and it is getting a lot better. I can eat almost all of the same things as I did before, I just have to brush very thoroughly after each meal to get the stuck food out. Things are feeling a lot better and I can talk a lot closer to normal now. At first it was very weird, but after a while I am sure it would feel weird to not have braces. I am scheduled to go 18-24 months, so I might as well sit back and enjoy the ride. We are going on a mini vacation this weekend on an island in Lake Erie in U.S.A. It will be fun I am sure. Later on in the summer (in about a month) I am going to Florida for a week to stay in a hotel with a view of the ocean. I can not wait for that!

I already think I am seeing some movement even if it is only a little. I try not to look for any, because whenever I read someone else's blog at this stage in their treatment, I was thinking to myself that they should be patient and not look too closely, because as the saying goes (something like) Water takes forever to boil if you stare at it. So, I am not trying to look for changes, but it seems there are some little changes. I am excited.

And I will post some pics probably next week as soon as my ortho e-mails them to me.

I wanted to let everyone know that I did not forget about posting pics of my arches up here. I have been really busy lately, my ortho has not e-mailed them to me. And I do not have a digital camera of my own...yet. I do not know why I have been holding off to get one. I have almost every other thing digital someone could need. It is ridiculous the amount of things that I have, and not having a digital camera! I have 2 computers, a new 52 inch TV, three other TVs, three SPAMS, a DVD recorder, a VCR, a stereo, surround sound , a TV in my Acura TL, 3 cordless phones, a cell phone, a new camcorder, etc. But no digital camera. I will buy one soon, so I do not have to depend on my ortho, he is very busy. I am going to buy a digital camera in about two or three weeks. I have to because we need one for our vacation to Florida for a week at the end of July. So I will get one soon and put pictures up, I really will.

Digital Camera

#21 Post by J Brace »

I bought a digital camera yesterday off an online store that has auctions and begins with an e***. I did not spell it out because I did not want it to get marked as spam. I love that store, fantastic deals, I have bought a lot of stuff from there. So, depending on when I get it, I will either post the pictures right before I leave, or when I get back from vacation.

Congratulations!!! We have really similar stories.. I have also always been concerned attractive, but my teeth just really always bothered me.. so after getting married/having a child/buying a house, I decided that it was important to do something for me. I am so glad that I did, and you will be also. Like you, I had the initial shock of 'oh my God, what did I do to myself?' I even came REALLY close to going in and having them taken off. But once you see your teeth moving around, you'll be glad they're there. Now that my teeth are straight and my orthodontist is working on my bite, I am getting antsy.. but I know that 2 years is really nothing in a lifetime.. so I try to 'forget' that they are there, hoping that the time will go quickly - which it has. We have the same toothbrush I think.. does yours not have the button that allows you to adjust the speed? It's hard to adjust to an electric toothbrush, but I'm spoiled now and couldn't go back to a manual. If you don't have a water pik, I'd recommend one... makes it easy to get stuff that's stuck out. I hope that by now, you're getting over the shock period and have started to see some changes!
