Small gap after braces!!!

#1 Post by teethuse »

I took off my braces about three weeks ago. There was no gap before I had braces.I wear my retainer 7/24 for the past three weeks but the gap is still there.I went back to my orthodontist to check yesterday. He told me it's just the stain and he polished it. He also used the floss to test it and told me my teeth are already in contact...but I can still see a small gap!! I can't see the gap after i put the retainer on, I don't know if the retainer closes the gap or the retainer hides the gap. Will the retainer closes the gap if i keep wearing it? What can i do??

It looks to me as if the retainer does close the gap for you. I would hope that consistent 24/7 wearing of your retainer would close the gap permanently. How soon after removing your retainer does the gap appear? Otherwise you might ask your ortho to try a bonded retainer. I believe they are often fitted when a patient has had a mid-line gap closed. Like you, I had no gap before I started treatment, but my ortho created a gap with IPR in order to find space for other teeth to move into line. I have both fixed ( bonded) and removable retainers and they work well. But a fixed retainer is not always possible on upper teeth-it depends on how upper and lower incisors meet. My overbite is quite shallow, so my bottom incisors do not make contact with the bonded retainer.

Your teeth look lovely by the way.

Thank you for your reply. I feel I can see the gap right away after I take off my retainer... Is the bonded retainer means the permanent retainer? I think I will wear my retainer for now, and ask my doctor about that when I go back for 3 months check.
