If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.
my teeth were debraced today, but the upper Essix retainer will be ready in 1 week. My ortho said it wont re-open the diastema again. but now it did like almost 1 milimeter, in few hours. i am so so worried.
will the retainer put my teeth back together next week without gap?
anyone please?
i will write a short diary here pith pics, as soon as i can.
please help me.
Sorry to hear this news metalmeredith. It must be really disappointing after the excitement of getting your braces off.
Retention of a closed diastema is apparently quite difficult. For that reason I understand that it is common for patients with a closed diastema to have a bonded retainer fixed behind their top teeth before their braces are removed. However, a bonded retainer behind the top teeth is not possible for many patients because their bottom teeth will bite onto it. But from pictures I have seen on this site, sometimes diastema patients seem to have a bonded retainer only on their two central incisors which may make the biting issue easier.
You need to discuss this relapse with your orthodontist when you receive your essix retainer next week. I am not sure whether the essix retainer will be capable of closing your new gap. If it does not, your ortho may have to refit some brackets and a powerchain again for a few weeks to re-close the gap before fitting some type of bonded retainer and a new essix retainer to fit over the bonded one.
Good luck,
Jem

My ortho mentioned about the bonded retainer in my 2 incisors. but he didn't do anything. he was sure it won't re-open. I still hope the Essix will solve my problem. I mean, he comes in the allignement that was right after braces were off, with no gap, that's why I still hope that solve my problem.
Thank you for the answer.
