wait time for retainer

#1 Post by ruvelina »

Hey guys.
I'm new to the forum. I am in the refinement process for Invisalign, and will be finished in early September. I may go with permanent retainers. I know that patients have to wait weeks before getting their new hawley or essix retainers, but how long is the wait time to receive permanent retainers? Or is it a procedure that's done the same day you are done with your braces?
Thanks.

I took impressions for my Hawley a week before debading so I'd have it the day I got my braces off. I took impressions for my Essix retainers at my deband appointment and picked them up the next day (they have an in-house lab for Essix). The permanent retainer was placed during my deband appointment, after the braces were removed and my teeth were polished but before my Essix impressions.
I had my braces on for 2 years, 1 month, 2 weeks and 2 days.

Permanent retainers are usually placed right after your braces are debonded, so right away. If you receive hawleys, average wait time can be a few days to a week, although sometimes they'll give you essix the same day.

I'm a bit paranoid now so I think if I had to wait too long (and my retainers did not have active components in them to combat any shifting), I would ask to have permanents bonded immediately and then maybe have them removed later after I was used to my removables and hadn't noticed any shifting.

I got my braces off today actually- at 9:00, took my impressions, and came back for my retainer at 12:30 :) But it's because I'm wearing Essix at the moment but I'll be getting Hawleys later on, as my ortho said they take longer to make

They removed my ligs and wires to take impressions for both hawleys a week after my final adjustment, giving the lab a couple weeks to finish them so they will be ready at debanding.
2/2/09: metal braces T/B
8/20/10: braced removed (18mons, 18days), hawley retainers T/B
9/16/10: LR central incisor extracted (failed root canal)
2/23/11: implant/bone graft
9/15/11: implant crown placed, lower lingual bonding corrected
9/21/11: upper bonding on lateral gaps from upper arch forward advancement
10/17/11: new hawley retainers w/plastic tubing over the 'social six' wire, both T/B

I don't know about permanent retainers, but my Essix and Hawley were ready the same day I had my braces removed. The impressions were taken in the morning after debracing, then 7 hours later I picked up both sets of retainers.
