Shaving teeth during debanding??

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Shaving teeth during debanding??

#1 Post by jackjack »

Hi I am scheduled to get debraced on July 14th!! A little scared about the process, but the thing I am most worried about is if they are going to shave or drill my teeth??? I know they drill off the glue but I've read that they shave down chips and ridges. Don't know if I want them to do that. Kinda like how my teeth look naturally. Any input???

They are your teeth: YOU have to live with them, not your ortho. So TELL him/her you do not want any shaving done!!

I knew my Ortho would want to even up my incisors (one is a smidge longer then the other) but I requested that the edges of my teeth be left alone and it was not a problem. I like the slightly imperfect natural look :D
So, make sure you speak up if that's what you really want. You can always have them smoothed up down the road if you change your mind

thanks lela. that's exactly would i'm looking for "slightly imperfect natural teeth". sounds weird, but i want my teeth to look like they are naturally straight. kind of like plastic surgery, you want it to look natural and not like you have fake boobs lol.

LOL! My ortho smoothed out some chips and uneven edges after my braces came off, I still have some rough edges on my lowers that I'll probably deal with later. My bite wasn't entirely corrected the first time, which probably contributed to the uneven edges because of wear. I think that a good ortho who is good with esthetics will be able to contour and fix small imperfections without making them look 'too perfect', know what I mean?

I guess part of the reason I really still want my lowers smoothed out is because they are still ridged - like when your teeth first come in? Usually they smooth out over time if your teeth fit together right, but mine didn't, so they never naturally smoothed out. It looks normal if you're 7 or 8 years old but NOT when you're 35.... I asked my old dentist to smooth them out some and she did, but not enough. I'll wait till I've finished treatment again so they are in the right position before I try again.

I was told I will have some worn areas tidied up - I'm quite happy about that though not looking forward to the process.

I have been getting IPR done thoughout my treatment - to make space and reduce the effect of black triangles etc. It is painless. Just hold still! :)

I actually had to ask my ortho to shave my canine teeth down, he didnt just do it on his own, so I wouldnt be too worried about him going ahead without asking

So just got my braces off yesterday, Sept 10th, and the ortho ended up shaping my centrals and laterals & they turned out soooo good!!! I can't believe these are my teeth :)
