I'm done...

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

I'm done...

#1 Post by sean83 »

Hi folks...well, I'm done. Today was the day. It's good to smile. See my www below for the results.

Anyway, I have 2 questions for fellow post-bracers...

1. They missed a fair bit while cleaning afterwards. I mean, they look great but there's a few rough bits you can't see that I can feel with my tongue, particularly where the bands were; and the odd bit of glue on the outside. Is this normal, and will it clean with normal brushing over time?

2. My teeth actually feel quite weak without all that metal holding them in place. I guess that's why I'm going back on Wednesday for a retainer, but is this feeling normal?

Hi sean83, congrats on making it to the finishing line.

In answer to your questions:

1. I think it's quite common for them to miss a bit of glue when removing the brackets, but I doubt if it will brush off over time. I'd suggest mentioning it at your retainer appointment and I'm sure they'll polish it off for you. Alternatively make a check-up/cleaning appointment with your regular dentist to get them all buffed up to a shine.

2. This feeling of instability is quite normal after the braces, but it will pass. Although my braces have been off for almost a month now, I still keep getting a sudden panic that I've forgotten to put my elastics in (stupid huh?).

Well, it was enjoyable while it lasted. I now have these stupid plastic retainers moulded to my teeth and can't get them off. No dinner for me tonight then.

Mercifully I can now update with the news that they came off. But note to future Essix wearers: the first time you remove them isn't nice! I sure hope it gets easier!
