Top Bonded Retainer Question

#1 Post by Dreamer »

I have bonded top and bottom retainers which I have had just a little over a year. I also wear wrap around hawleys everynight faithfully. Tomorrow I have an appt to replace my top bonded retainer. I remember them saying that I should wear it for year then it was up to me after that.. I'd really love to tell them tomorrow to just take it off and not replace it, then continue wearing only my Hawleys at night on top. (I'd keep the bonded bottom one forever!).. Anyway my question is: If I continue to wear my Hawley every night always will my top teeth stay in place without the overjet coming back? I know many people never even get the bonded top at all so I was hoping the Hawley alone would be enough. Also wearing a Hawley just at night, is it enough to keep teeth from rotating generally?

As far as I have seen/experienced/heard, you SHOULD be alright with the Hawleys. If your ortho says it makes no difference, I'd trust him if he's done his job so far :)

Sounds fair enough! :) I'm thinking maybe a compromise and have the top bonded just behind my front two teeth then of course still keeping the bottom one. I want/need that one forever since bottom teeth relapse the most!

I may talk to my ortho about bonded retainers for my front teeth topa nd bottom, because they were the worst with movement. I don't know if he does them though!

I suggest both....bonded retainers plus Hawleys for nighttime wear..at least for the first year. My ortho said bonded retainers for one year then it was up to me after that but always the Hawleys at night which is fine with me! The only downfall is that it's harder to floss...haha..I only have 4 hours until my appt and still haven't decided what I want to do..remove the whole top and forget, replace it, or just replace it with the top 2 on top...that's what I am leaning towards right now..just the top 2..don't want to risk a gap reopening there!

Update: Because it's been 14 months of wearing top bonded retainer the orthodontist said there was no reason to keep it since I am still wearing my Hawleys at night. She removed it...it's heavenly to be able to floss regular on top now! :)
