Open bites and Essex

I am near the end of my treatment, and I was told at the beginning that I would be wearing Essex retainers when I get my braces off. I had a huge open bite (about 5-6mm) on one side, and a smaller one on the other side. The large open bite has closed quite a bit, but probably will not close all the way. My ortho told me that there is a high probability of my open bite opening again after braces. I know retainers can not prevent this from happening, but does anyone have experience with the Essex and open bites?

Hi Sherwood Forest
I had an openbite at the start of my treatment, it is still ever so slightly open. I had my brace removed, top in June 08 bottom in Sept 08. I am now in Essex retainers and so far so good, no opening up of my bite. The openbite was corrected with elastics and, touch wood, is behaving itself so far.

I had a bilateral posterior open bite (approx 3-4mm on both sides). None of the teeth between my incisors and second molars made contact.
My ortho had me in a positioner for 2 months (night time only) post debanding, then into essix retainers back in February. All is sweet.
