Can Essix Be Made Thicker/Stronger?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Can Essix Be Made Thicker/Stronger?

#1 Post by Dreamer »

Well finally my gaps have closed with these wrap around Hawleys! My Orthodontist said if gaps were closed she would make me the clear retainers instead on July 8 when she does my final records. I don't really know if hers are called Essix as she makes them herself but my question is: can they be made thicker upon request? The first pair of clear trays I had I kinda bit hard into one place fairly quickly. I was just wondering if there is anyway to prevent this again?

I'll have to ask and find out! Are the ones they make in the office an actual Essix retainer or just a spinoff of them generally?

I was curious because I wondered if they send the molds out to be made if they come back any more durable than the ones they make in office. (haha..of course I am sure if I requested they be made out of the office that that might be offensive and even then I have no clue if they would come back better made at a lab!).

Does anyone who reads this have Essex retainers that your orthodontist send the impressions out to a lab to be made?
