Anybody got bonded retainer on upper arch plus essix??

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Anybody got bonded retainer on upper arch plus essix??

#1 Post by alibaba »

Can anyone give me any advice on this - I have a bonded retainer as well as a Hawley for night-time on my upper teeth, I cant stand the Hawley, unfortunately it doesnt fit properly(have been back to the ortho 3 times to amend it to no avail). What I would really like is an Essix retainer to wear over the top of the bonded to give me some peace of mind about the teeth shifting. However the ortho says Essix aren't suitable to be worn on the same arch as a bonded. I would appreciate if anyone knows if this can be done and if its perhaps just his opinion on the matter? Meryaten what do you think?
All advice taken gratefully good or bad!

I've got bonded and essix type retainers on both arches. The essix are worn nights only.

Thanks for the replies, my ortho's reason for me not having essix as well as the bonded as that apparently the essix can rub against the glue on the bonded and it could cause the bonded wire to dislodge. Of course I'm no orthodontist but to me this doesnt seem quite right-especially as others have this combo. I didnt have an open bite or an overbite when i started treatment- just crowding. I am disappointed at the moment because there is a slight shift in my two front teeth which I'm really not happy about. My feeling was that if my ortho could give me an essix retainer based on my moulds when the bra came off, this could possibly address the issue. (I was debanded end of Nov 07). Its stressing me out quite a bit because I dont want to have spent all this time and money getting my teeth corrected to end up with a result I'm not happy with, as I could have just got veneers! However I decided to go with braces as I wanted to keep my own healthy teeth just straighten them.

Meryaten, I have a question for you. My regular dentist wants me in a nightguard for clenching. My ortho said my essix (which I only wear at night) should be sufficient protection for my clenching. I never knew I had a clenching problem but now it is very noticeable as my gums are starting to recede. I guess I’m asking for your opinion on whether I should stick with my essixs or get a nightguard for my clenching problem?
Got my braces off 9/20/07 after 19 months and 3 weeks. WOOOOOOHOOOOO!!
