Hi

Got de-brace last week into upper and lower essix retainers, I am to go back tomorrow to get a fixed lower retainer on my lowers, what are peoples experiences of these types of retainer?

I am quite happy using the essixs, I do have some recession on my lowers to which I am going to be consulting a periodontist within the next few months, my ortho states that the fixed lowers will help when I get a gum graft, yet I ve read stories where the fixed lower retainers attract plaque?

I ve not really had a problem talking with the essix retainers, do the lower fixed retainers effect your speech, if so they can forget fixing them on!

I was debanded in May and have an upper hawley, a lower fixed and a lower essix. My lower fixed causes absolutely no speech problems. I hardly even remember that it's there, except that food, especially pasta and salad get caught in it every now and then.

I was debonded in January and I got an essex type retainer to tweek a few teeth before I got my bonded lower retainer.

I don't mind it at all. I definately feel it, but I don't mind it. It can be a bit of a nusence when I have a piece of food stuck in it and I mess with it until I dislodge the bugger.

The installation of it was fairly unpleasent, but it's there now and it's okay.

I've had a fixed lower retainer for 15 years, the same one. Although food does get stuck behind it sometimes, it is worth the price to not worry about my teeth moving. I just got braces again but only on the top because, thanks to my fixed lower retainer, my bottom teeth have not moved at all since I got braces removed 15 years ago. And plaque can build up anywhere in your mouth if you don't floss, brush, and get cleanings regularly. I highly recommend the fixed retainer.
