getting replacement retainers in the future

I'm wearing an Essix retainer on my top teeth now. Obviously it won't last forever. When it breaks, how do I go about getting a new retainer??

Can my ortho order me a new one based on molds from his file? Or, do I have to get new molds taken by him?

Also, there's a very good chance I'll be living on the other side of the country in a couple years. If my retainer needs replacing then, do I just make an appointment with any dentist/ortho to have molds taken and sent out for a new retainer?

How does this work?!?!

Thank you!

The day my braces came off and I was given my Hawley retainer I was given the final molds they had used to make the retainer. I was told if I needed to have a new retainer made to bring the molds back and they could use them. If they have to make new molds it would cost more.
