ortho appointments AFTER your braces come off

I'm in an Essix retainer on my top teeth now (they're done!). I still have braces on my bottom teeth. I am getting my braces off in a few months.
On the day I go to have my braces removed, I'll be getting my bottom fixed retainer that day.
My question is...After your braces are removed, how many times and how often do you visit your ortho for retainer checks and such??
I imagine you go back a couple months after treatment is over to make sure the retainer is still "working" and to have things checked out. When is your last visit with your ortho assuming all goes well?? 6 months after braces removal?? 1 year??
Thanks everyone. Great boards!!

the ortho asst at my debanding appt told me I'd have a few appts in the next month or two, then after that I wouldn't have one for 6 months. Then I think after that I'm done!

My first appointment was 3 months after debanding to check on retainer fit.
My next one is in 6 months. No clue what is after that.

I think Meryaten is right, it varies from ortho to ortho. Mine went 8 weeks, then 6 months, then 1 year, and then another year.
Unfortunately, I only made it to the 6 month one before I had to be put back in braces.

Yes. Mine said 6-8 weeks, 6 months and then most likely at 1 year.
After that, it depends on how my teeth are settled.

mtbrncofn - Did you have to pay for braces all over again???!!!! (If you don't mind me asking that is)

I don't mind you asking at all.
No, I didn't. I think it was because it was so close to having had them off and what was happening wasn't due to something I did or didn't do. I haven't been charged anything else additionally. I'm very thankful for that. Especially since I am way over my initial 2 month estimate.
I think I'm getting them off soon....AGAIN.

I had a check up to day and the dentist said he'd like me to schedule an appointment with my original ortho.
He'd like him to look at his molds, his notes and see if it looks ok - this is about 3 years down the line! I wore retainers until about a year ago as per the ortho's instructions.
He said he'd like a second look - unfortunately it's a challenge cos he's up in NJ and I'm in FL.
Ah well after summer break, I'll give him a call
