Retainer

#1 Post by sniffer »

I have been wearing my hawley type retainer for the last 2 months. I tried to put my Essix retainers in last night and found that they no longer fit. I also have permanent retainers fixed to the back of my teeth. Should my teeth have moved so much in the last 2 months that the Essix retainers no longer fit? Should I go back to my ortho and will I have to have braces put back on?

Personally I would go back and check. I had permanent retainers fitted 3 weeks ago and am still waiting for my removable retainers. My ortho wanted my bite to adjust a bit more before giving me Hawleys so perhaps some small movement in expected.

I think it is a good idea to book an apt with your ortho to get it checked out. Depending when you were debraced will depend how fast your teeth can move. If you were debraced 2 months ago then yes teeth can generally move faster at this stage, because its still earlier on and your teeth are still trying to find their permanent spot. I think if I remember correctly if you are using a hawley retainer, the ortho can make minor adjustments for your bite. Is your essix retainer being used on the same teeth?

Thanks for youir replies.

Yes I have upper and lower hawley retainers and upper and lower essix retainers. I also have upper and lower permanent retainers fixed on the inside of my teeth. My fixed braces were removed 7 months ago. I stopped using the essix ones about 2 months ago and started using the hawley ones as they seemed more durable with my nightime clenching. The problems I am having are around a missing lower tooth

hey sniffer..I was just out of any retainer for 2 wks, while my implant surgery site healed..put in the hawley and it was tightish...put on the essix type and it was really tight...but only for about 30mins. I'd get it checked out with your ortho if you can not manage to get either retainer in, so they can take a look!
