Can I call the shots with the NHS?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Can I call the shots with the NHS?

#1 Post by Muffinmamma »

I will have had my fixed braces for 2 years in September. 11 weeks ago I had bi-max surgery and both my surgeon and orthodentist have said there's nothing much left to do with the braces.

Last appointment I told the ortho of an awful metallic taste I had from one of the banded molers. She took off the metal bands on that side. Currently I am only wearing the elastic band on the other side to move the bottom moler. She is very laid back about this, saying it may move, both sides may move on their own (to the correct position), to me it is of no great importance and I don't think it effects the bite.

She estimates September/October for removal of fixed braces. My next appointment is early August.

SO, my question is how much prep is needed for removal of braces and making of Hawley retainers IN THE NHS! I am guessing it will take longer in NHS(having read on here people got the Hawley a week later). I am having fixed bands too, is that after rthe Hawley or at the same time?
Bearing in mind I only get 10 minutes an appointment am guessing nothing much will happen in August. If we abandon the tinkering with the molers, does Sept sound likely for removal of fixed braces?

i know I am so close now I should just be grateful, but I have had enough now. Still trying to re establish good muscle tone post op eating with fixed braces is not something to be done in public! Also getting urges for curry and red wine..

Hey there :)

I don't know if you're still looking for information but I just spotted your post just now :)

The NHS - you'll go in around 9/10am to have your braces removed - then they will take the moulds of your teeth.

Your Hawley retainer will be ready by 3/4pm so no need to worry about having to wait long!

I know this because I had mine removed last year and got all my treatment on the NHS :)
