Lisp.

#1 Post by jennandtonic »

I just got my retainers fitted today.

They're all right; don't hurt or anything. This lisp, however, is really annoying me! I'm going to practice reading out loud, and from reading on here I know it will go away in a few days...in the mean time, I feel like crying.

Who else felt/feels this way?

I get my retainers on Thursday. By then you'll be a pro a speaking with them and can laugh at me.

My sister had a retainer to correct a single tooth. She called me and sounded so upset: "I can't thpeak wid deese tings on." It took about four or five days for her to sound normal again.

How are you doing jennandtonic?

I got upper and lower hawleys today and am lisping now, I have to practice pronouncing our company's name - so many consonants! But it is better than the bruised puffy face I was sporting 3 months ago!

Well CONGRATULATIONS on getting your retainer, fuzzy! :D

Everyone tells me I'm doing MUCH better; I was at dinner with my aunt and uncle, and they both said they couldn't hear a lisp at all. I still hear it, though, mostly on the words with lots of consonants like you mentioned, fuzzy! But my 's's' are perfect now, which I'm relieved about.

Thanks everyone for the encouraging responses. In the back of my mind I was worried that I would actually be lisping for the entire time I have to wear these! I'm not as worried anymore, and continue to 'practice' by reading aloud and singing as much as possible.

The first day I got my retainer I have a very bad lisp because they didnt fit.
The part that was supposed to touch the roof of my mouth didnt.

I wore them the whole day ..even to bed.. and i sucked on it all night so that it would touch the roof of my mouth.. when i woke up i found that the retainer was stuck at the top & my lisp went away.

I guess the retainer just has to get adjusted to fit & my roof had to expand so that there was no space that air could go through at the top to make a lisp.

Got my retainer a week ago and i'm still trying to get used to them - have to wear them 24/7 for 3 months although Orthondontist said I could take them out on Christmas Day (how kind!)

I don't know what kind they are; just the standard retainer. I'm actually kind of wondering about the same thing on my top retainer...it sits low on my teeth, I'm hoping that it will still "retain" my teeth that way! I'll ask my ortho next time I go in.

dublingal--at least your ortho gave you a time frame! I asked my ortho how long I'd have to wear them 24/7, and she said "we'll see." She says that because she knows it annoys me!
