Teeth movement during the day. When will this subside?
Hello,
I've been visiting this site since I got braces. Now I am out. I have a question, and I have searched and I haven't found a specific answer. I'm wearing a essix retainer for about 3 months. I was instructed to only wear my retainer at nights FOREVER. I was ok with this and I thought my teeth were pretty nice. However, after the first month, I noticed that my teeth seem to move a little throughout the day. When I put my retainer back on for the night, they move back to place and look fine in the morning. Then, at the end of the day, a very small gap appears between my front teeth. This bothers me because 1.) I got braces to fix the gaps 2.) I don't' want this small gap that appears to get bigger b/c I would feel really self-conscious and be angry that my braces did not work. I called my ortho, and the two hygienists told me to wait till my retainer check to talk to my doctor ( After the accused me of not wearing my retainer, WHICH I DO!!!) My appointment is in January, and I am worried that this problem might get worse. Well, this is long, so my questions are 1.) Does anyone have the same teeth movement problem? 2.) How long will it take for my teeth to at least stabilize during the day ( I know that I will need to wear my retainer during the night forever). A response from anyone would be great. Thanks!

i found when my bands first came off that the period between them coming off and the appointment to get my retainer ( was about 2 days) that my teeth moved alot! i notice in photos the day after they were removed and i can see a noticeable gap, however i wore this retainer for two months full time and now as im wearing it only at night its working wonders, in my opinion they dont take very long to settle at all, only a couple of weeks for me to notice no movement during the day.
I dont have my braces off yet but on Monday I had the mold done for my retainers; my Ortho told me since I had spaces before braces and a nice size one in the front that I would have to wear a permanent retainer on top on the front 4 teeths. She says a person with my situation, the gaps tend to open, even if I have the retainers off for a few hours. So before they made the mold for my Harley's, my 4 front teeth got a bonded retainer. I can't even see it. I will wear the other reatainers on top of the 4 bonded teeth. Maybe you can get your ortho to put a bonded retainer on the top 4 teeth; they might have to adjust your other retainers so they can fit on top just slightly. It's a very tin wire and since it only involve 4 teeth, it's not that bad. At least until your teeth settles; which I don't think that will happen with all this see-saw movement.
I can't give an answer, as I only have my Essix retainers for about 10 days now.
But I experience the same, even if I do not wear them for some hours. So, I do
wear these all the time, only remove them for eating and cleaning. My ortho
did say to start full time and to gradually leave them out more, to end after about
a month wearing them only at night. That is what I'll do.
But you have yours now 3 months. So, I think too a bonded retainer might be better
for you. I wonder what your ortho will tell.

I have been reading a lot about bonded retainers. I think that would be perfect for my upper four teeth. does anyone know how much they cost ( since, I am done paying on my braces). Also, can it be used in conjunction with the essix? I think I have to wait for my ortho appointment in January to talk to my ortho. Hopefully, he will have a solution (because he tends to be rude to me and say that's the way it is). I guess if he can't offer me a solution then I might have to call around to another ortho ( they have orthos and that can just make retainers, right?) or maybe my dentist. We shall see. Thanks.
I called twice, and I could only talk to his helpers ( He can only talk to you in person. I really don't think he cares sometimes). They said to wear it as indicated ( They said only at night). I thought that if I wore it longer, then my teeth might stop moving as much when I ease out of it. I have been doing that for the past three days. We shall see.
My little sister wears Essix retainers and have both upper & lower 6 front teeth in a bonded retainer. As for cost, I'm also finished paying for my treatment (paid the entire thing in 2 payments the 1st 6 months), I was not charge anything extra for the bonded retainers. My sister also was not charge anything extra for her bond & Essix retainers. Make an appoitment to see your ortho and stand firm on your decisions. My ortho tried to talk me into Essix retainers but I knew I wanted the Harley's (I don't mind the front wire).Echeatha wrote:I have been reading a lot about bonded retainers. That is what I think I will do. I have been wearing my retainer a lot more and my teeth have been staying place (obviously b/c of the retainer). I highly doubt ( knock on wood) that I would have to have braces again because my teeth only shift once the retainer has been off for eight or more hours and then they return to their original spots with the retainer on. Sometimes I think I am a perfectionist b/c my boyfriend says he cannot see anything and that I'm crazy because my teeth are great. I don't think I am crazy b/c I just feel I should get what I payed for. Thanks for all your help, guys!
