Taking braces off before it's due

#1 Post by tanie »

Hi Doctor,
I had braces for 6 months. The orthodontics said my case would require 10 months. However, I have to take my braces off before it's due. I was supposed to be taking them off in late november, but due to personal reasons I have to take it off in early august.I wanted to ask 2 questions:

1) I am paying on a plan. Do I need to pay for the whole treatment cost? Or Do I only pay up until august?

2)I am taking them off only 4 months early. Would that affect my teeth a great deal? Please let me know asap.

3) I had a gap in my front teeth. It's all closed now, is it likely to reopen after I take off my braces? WHat should I do to ensure it doesn't re-open?

Quick answers would be highly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Maybe you could just get them off temporarily? Like, if its for a cranial MRI or if you want them off for a wedding or something, some orthos take them off temporarily for you.

Really?? They take them off temporarily? But won't you have to pay the installment fees (the large amount that was paid at the beginning of treatment)?
Thank you so much for your reply.

Invisalign, sometimes for certain MRI's, they get a blurred picture from braces. Don't assume its for vanity's sake.. she just said personal.

Tanie, I'm not sure what they would charge you, I think it depends on the ortho. Hopefully one of the docs here could tell you what they would charge.

I would say that it depends on the situation about how much I charge. If it is possible, I would recommend leaving the braces on. For one reason, the total actual treatment time will be longer. And it will certainly cost more, and maybe much more.

If they do remove them they will give you a retainer to hold the teeth in position, so the space should remain closed. In the end, it will work out regardless of what you choose, it just becomes a time/money issue.

Thank you so much everyone for your suggestions. I am moving overseas and that's why I want it off asap. I don't trust the orthodontics of that country, so i would rather take it off than letting another ortho mess up my teeth.

How long will you be overseas? I know of some people on here that went on military duty for 3-4 months at a time in their braces... they just carried some wire cutters in case anything happened is all.

I don't know if you have already moved or not, but I lived for about 6 months in another country with my braces on. I was concerned about seeing orthodontists in this particular country as well, so I just went about 6 weeks between appointments with my U.S. Dr (luckily I was able to fly home at those intervals). My doc said it added about 4 months onto my treatment time, but it was worth it in my opinion.
