Overjet has increased dramatically with expanders - help!

#1 Post by pruettmj »

My 8-year-old daughter has 2 expanders; an RPE on top (which we turn 1x/day) and a Schwarz on bottom (1x/every other day). She started out with a fair-sized overbite and overjet, but after having them on for about 1 1/2 months, the overjet has increased quite a bit. I think part of this is due to the fact that the lower front teeth have actually moved in some since being expanded. Will this correct at all during expansion, or will she be stuck this way until braces?

Also, I've noticed that her upper arch is now noticably wider than her lower which makes her bite "off". I've been very pleased so far with my ortho, but am just a bit nervous.

I have a quadhelix on top and bihelix expander on the bottom. My ortho gave me an overjet prior to putting my lower brackets on. Part of it is to prevent you from biting off your lower brackets. They will pull back my teeth when the other teeth are in line (he's narrowed it a little already), somewhere down the road. It is possible that she might always have a slight overjet b/c they have to line up the bite. I wasn't too concerned about it, but my ortho warned me about it ahead of time. My upper arch is wider than my lower arch still and since different teeth are moving my bite changes daily. It's really nothing to worry about, but if you're concerned, give your daughter's ortho a call.
