Premolars/bicuspids extractions

#1 Post by Nami »

For those of you that got your premolars or bicuspids extracted, how long did it take you to eat comfortably afterwards and how did you keep the area clean? When did you start brushing your teeth afterwards?

Oh and I have to know...

How many hours did it take for your extractions to stop bleeding post surgery so you can eat a decent meal?

Thanks!

Hi!
I had my 4 first premolars extracted because I suffered from bimax protrusion and lip incompetence.
I had to wait around 5 days after each extraction (my teeth had been extracted one by one to avoid much bleeding) to eat confortably but bleeding stopped a couple of hours after the operation.
To keep the area clean, my dentist firstly gave me some clove to make healing easier. I kept brushing my teeth normally after receiving extractions.
You suffer from bimax protrusion too?

Yup bimax protrusion and lip incompetence as well. I think it's tough to get it done once at a time... It sounds like you had local anesthetic and that you were awake for each one. I had it taken out all in one go. Taking teeth out is terrifying for me. Being KO'd throughout the surgery was a blessing for me. I'm recovering post surgery now. :GapToothed:

Yes, I received local anesthetic and I was awake. Yes, I completly agree with you : extracting premolars one by one is easier as you know what to attempt for the three last extractions.
Have a nice recovering.
As you suffer from bimax protrusion, your result will be probably very nice : bimax protrusion with lip incompetence is a case when a 4 premolar extraction is nearly always recommanded.
I am debraced now and I send some photos of my before (photo 1) and my after (photo 2 and 3).

Hey Lovespain5!

You are one brave soul to be awake each and every time they took your tooth out! My recovery is going along. It's hard to face myself in the mirror seeing all those spaces!

My results is highly dependent on my orthodontist's skill! I was told that my teeth function will improve, but it may not be a complete fix... How big was your overjet if you don't mind me asking? Thank you for sharing your photos! Your results looks great!! What kind of retainers do you have on now?

In fact, I didn't really have an overjet (around 2-3 millimeters) as both jaws protruded. I had a class I malocclusion.
I wear the Essix retainers.

Ah, I have a class II malocclusion. I really can't wait until those spaces close!! I plan to get essix retainers once I remove braces too. Have you replaced your first essix retainers due to natural wear and tear yet? I read that Essix isn't as durable as the other retainers...

I had them for nearly two years and they are still perfect. To keep the Essix more durable, you have to clean them with warm water but never very hot as Essix are, as you said, slightly more fragile than the other types of retainers.
