Getting braces soon

#1 Post by Curry queen »

Hi everyone. I've just turned 42 and am getting braces put on in just under three weeks. I'm very excited especially as I only found out recently that adults could even have braces! I thought they only worked on children/teens when the mouth was still growing.

I found out after moving dentists and asking about cosmetic treatment such as veneers to correct my front teeth. Wow, I had no idea all of this would happen so quickly but I've found out loads of information online in the last few weeks.

I will have ceramics on top first of all as I have a deep overbite. Then when some room has been made
I will have bottoms added. Not sure if these will be ceramic or metal as it will depend whether my teeth will rub at the front. I'll also need elastics at some point for my bite and also a wire thing to expand my upper arch. Hopefully I won't need extractions, will se how it goes.

That's all for now and I'll get back to enjoying reading everyone else's stories.

Welcome!

Congrats for making a decision to improve your smile.

I've had my second round of braces on for a couple weeks; I'm 40.

Lots of great people on this board with a lot of different experiences. If you have any questions; someone will be able to answer them.
Round 3 (lifetime) Damon stainless applied 3/16/20 (after 4 weeks attempting invisalign) On for about 18 months
Night time elastics with invisalign retainers; still...
Double jaw surgery was 6/18/15...
Orthodontics never really ends...
I'm emphatically against extraction orthodontics!

Good for you! My dentist suggested braces for my deep overbite and overjet. I am 52 so it was a shock to me but my lower teeth are hitting the top of my gums inside my mouth so I went for some consultations. I will be getting my braces on July 25. I will do the records and get spacers put on July 14. I will be getting 6 ceramics on top and the rest will be metal. I am not sure if I will get them all at the same time or the tops or bottoms separately. What kind of braces are you getting. Are they the regular type, Damon or In-Ovation?

Thanks for the welcome! I'm getting 3m clarity ceramic I think, the ones with the elastic ligatures. He didn't mention the self ligating type so I assume he doesn't specialise in those. Are the traditional ceramic any smaller than Damon ceramic?

Forgot to say that I'm based in the UK.

Hi curry queen

Welcome and congrats on making the decision to get braced!

I've just turned 40, am in the UK and have a date for top braces to go on 10 July, so not far behind you :D

I don't know about you, but I'm not very good at the waiting around bit, I can't wait to just get going on this journey now that I've made the decision to go ahead.

It seems there are lots of friendly and helpful people on here, plus a fair share of 40+, which fills me with confidence. Getting braced when older can be a bit of a lonely experience, most of my friends and family think I'm off my head for doing this, the standard response is 'there's nothing wrong with your teeth'

Keep us up to date with your progress and good luck!

Thanks Aviol

I am also now counting the days until my appointment! They did offer me a date this week but I'm away on holiday next week so thought it would be sensible to leave it until I return otherwise I will be trying to get to grips with the pain, weirdness and eating/cleaning etc whilst trying to enjoy a holiday of relaxing, eating and drinking!

My family are pretty cool with the idea and my mum even picked up leaflets about invasalign etc from her dentist. However, invisalign isn't really sufficient for me if I want to correct my overbite. My ortho said I could do invisalign to straighten the top front teeth, but that's all it would do and would be for cosmetic appearance only. One of my problems is that my bottom front teeth are chipped and worn from the overbite and I want them to look good too, so I'm going the whole hog.

What sort of braces are you getting?

Good luck Curry queen, I'm 40 and also from the UK. I'm having an upper pre-molar extracted on Wednesday then metal braces (top and bottom) on 24th June - it seems there are a few of us on here getting braced around the same time.
I look forward to following your journey.

Hi KMC, nice to hear from you.

Best of luck for your extraction on Wednesday, I'm sure it will be fine. I don't yet know if I'll need them as we are going to start without doing it but if my teeth start to stick out too much we'll have to re-think! Although I don't fancy extractions, I'm sure that if I start developing buck teeth I'll soon change my tune.

KMC - I looked at your other post and saw your photos - I think it's great to be able to see real life comparisons - keep posting as they improve. I'll must remember to take some "before" photos before I get started!

It's great that you have such fantastic support around you.

I've not told loads of people, but not kept it a secret either, one of my friends seemed to turn a corner with it when I chatted to her in depth about it the other day, she went from the opinion of 'you don't need it, it's a waste of money'. To 'good on you, I think you're being really brave'. :D

I've attached a link to my story on my signature rather than hog your thread

I've just had an update on my treatment plan and I will start off with a quad helix on its own - this is a wire thing inside my top arch to widen the arch I think - and then after 12 weeks I will get my ceramic brackets on the top arch. Not sure if the quad helix stays or goes at that stage, I guess we'll wait and see. Then I will eventually get my bottom brackets when my top teeth have moved enough to give clearance for them.

The good news is that my treatment can still start in the next couple of weeks but I get the luxury of another 3 months before anything will show and before I have to cut back on red wine and curry :P

On June 12th (in two days...) I'm starting with spacers. Braces will follow one week later. Now I'm getting pretty nervous. It's a bit like Christmas or better Christmas as it has been as a child. It's very funny to be nervous as a child in the age of 46 ;-)

Ooo, great that you're getting started and have a little extra time to wean yourself off the curry and red wine. Curry and coffee (not together, that would be pretty revolting) are the two things I will miss the most. I'm planning to still treat myself to coffee at the weekends but I really need to kick it into touch throughout the week.

Hope all goes well with your quad helix.
