Hi Glandyover!
Firstly I'm curious about your screen name..
I am an Indian and have been living here since birth.
The usual custom in India is to eat with our hands but there's no compulsion.. Wondering why you had to 'learn to eat without utensils' in a city like Bangalore!!

I do not suppose there is any dearth of dining places there where spoons, forks, etc would not be available. But then learning anything new is fun. Besides eating with hands is not only simple, natural(our hands are our best tools),quick, easy but scientifically proven to be very beneficial. So why complicate life?

In fact Indian food is best had with fingers. If you try eating Indian breads such as roti, naan etc with knives and forks it'll be impractical if not impossible.
Anyway I think I went off topic. Maybe because it reminded me of the recent comment made by Oprah Winfrey in her show while visiting India about Indians "still" eating with hands.

Quite ignorant and definitely not in good "taste"!

However I understand that for people who are not used to it, its a little cumbersome. I t may even be amazing or unthinkable..

[just goes to show how much more there is in the world that we are yet to know of.. isn't it?] Also for those who are used to very sanitised environments, the immune system isn't as strong.. so it may cause indigestion or other problems.
About Orthodontists in India- since i live in a metro city there are all facilities. In fact there are 3 dental clinics in the lane that I reside in. By the number of dental clinics I see around me I guess there are a lot of doctors and patients around. Quite a few of my classmates wore braces as adults.
All the best with your treatment
