Hello (same as MMF)

#1 Post by Karley »

I'm Karley -- I'm a 30 yr old Mom who is considering getting braced (as all of you put it  ) Right now I'm going threw some issues with dental work to hopefully gear me up and get me ready for my ortho consult.

A couple weeks ago I had my routine exam and cleaning with a new dentist (our ins changed as of late) found out I had a couple cavities and my TMJ was flaring up again  So I had the fillings done and he fit me for a bottom nightguard for the TMJ. Ya see the original reason I never had braces as a kid was because my dentist kept telling my Mom he had to correct the TMJ first. Well needless to say because of the crowding of my top front teeth he never could even fit me for a splint. So therefor the TMJ has always been there and from what I'm learning will always be there so long as I have stress.
Anyway, back to the apt I had the fillings taken care of but after I left I was in soooo much pain that I finally (after two weeks) broke down and called him to be seen again. Turns out I had to have an emergency root canal last Friday and in the process the dentist broke off part of his tool in my back molar. So now he has reffered me to a specialist (endodontist) and I'm seeing him tomarrow for the rest of the root canal. Then I will be fitted for the crown I'm assuming next week.

So that brings me to my ticker  when I will finally be able to see the orthodontist for my consultation. I'm very interested in what he will say and how much it's going to cost to correct my smile. This is something I've been thinking of doing since I was 13 yrs. old. So that's about it in a nutshell if you made it all the way threw I thank you and look forward to hanging out here.

Ouch!! That sounds like a rough root canal! I hope the endodontist visit goes better! I was impressed by the one I was sent to and I would go back to this guy anytime.

My step-mom was advised that I needed braces as a kid but her take on it was that vitamins will cure absolutely anything - therefore she wasn't going to waste her money on braces for me. Now that I'm 40, I'm finally getting those braces!

I'm a "teeth-clencher" when stressed so I can imagine what your TMJ must be like. You have my sympathy with that!

I think you are heading down the right road by visiting an orthodontist. Hopefully he/she will be able to help your TMJ as well as give you a beautiful smile. :)

Thanks saint for the support -- I had the endodontist apt yesterday and just like you said it went great I would go back to him anytime. I'm not sure about the dentist who did all the rest of the work and apparently I am supposed to see him again for the cap ? But the endo said he would help me find a new one - maybe I can also get a second opinion from an ortho as well. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for responding ;)

Hey Karley welcome and glad you got that root canal taken care of. Getting a referal by your orthdontist or the oral surgeon is a great idea. I once found myself in need of a new practioner - due to his horrible attitude and skills. I asked one of the specialists that I saw and he gave me the name of someone he thought was very good. I have been with the new one for 15 or 20 years now!

Good luck with the rest of your treatment. :D

Karley, I'm very glad that the endo appt. went well. My regular dentist put the crown on as well. If you are not happy with your current dentist, by all means ask the endo for a recommendation.

I was skeptical of what the first ortho told me (at the initial consultaion, he measured how wide I could open my mouth and then outlined a multiyear, megabuck treatment plan!) His practice had an assembly line feel to it and his staff was curt and abrupt and made me feel that I was imposing on them.

I got a second opinion from an ortho a co-worker recommended. I got a very thorough initial exam and didn't get a treatment plan until after the teeth molds were made, x-rays taken etc. The course of treatment was explained in great detail and he took the time to talk to me and get to know me His staff is great and just incredibly friendly and caring.

I'm glad I got that second opinion!!!!!
