22 years old, and just got metal-mouthed :(

I just got my top braces put on on August 19. I hated them from the start. My mouth felt huge and bulky...I had put off getting these things for years, but I had to do it now. It was a matter of having healthy teeth...

I've gotten somewhat used to the tops since last week, but what I fear the most (one of the things at least) is having to get that thing put in the top jaw to widen it. People say I'll have to learn to eat all over again and I'll talk funny. I don't like the idea of going to work with that in my mouth, especially if I have to answer the phones. :(

Another thing I fear the most is: how am I supposed to feel professional at a job interview with metal in my mouth? I tried researching topics but I couldn't get a definite answer. I hate my job and I want to switch, but I fear I'll have to stay here until the braces come off in 2 1/2 - 3 years. The thought of having to deal with this job until the braces come off is scary.

I know this is long but I type a lot normally. I guess I could use some advice or helpful words. :( I feel like a kid, and a friend of mine actually said I look like I'm in high school again. Go figures...

Hi heather,
I just wanted to say i'm also 22, and have a full metal mouth. I also have a job interview this week. Yes, i'm nervous, but really, what employer would only employ you because of what you look like?! Confidence outweighs looks every time, and if i have a dollar for the amount of friends i've seen who said they don't even notice my braces, even when i speak....i'd be, well, about $5 better off! But still, what i'm trying to say is... don't let it get you down! Its a temporary thing in a very long life span-put it into context, whats 2 years out a of lifespan of around 80 years? Absolutely zilch...it'll go quicker than you think, and don't let your braces hold you back from going for interviews, i'm certainly not putting my life on hold just cos i've got braces, and neither should you!
Hope this helps :)

Yes it helps. :D Like I mentioned in another post I'm planning on looking into a few places for a new job, so an interview is deinitely in order. I agree if they're only looking at looks, altho I've always been certain you have to dress professional (getting off-topic here I'm afraid...)
I feel I can handle it when it happens. I have to have the thing-a-ma-jig put in my top jaw to widen it and I've heard it'll make me talk kinda funny...that's the only thing really holding me back. It, too, is temporary of course. :]
Thanks for the advice. I'm more used to them than I ever thought I could be, and it's only been about 2 weeks. xD So it should definitely get better and easier as more time goes on.

Hi Heather! I know getting braces as an adult is a difficult decision, but think of how many people pass it by and live their lives with unhealthy teeth. You're only 22, that is very young. When you first get your braces it's hard to feel confident. Don't be discouraged. If you go in for a job interview stand tall and proud!

I'm excited to hear about your progress! :)

:) Thanks. It gets better with each day. I'm more used to the eating habits and brushing habits. Smiling is easier; it all seems less difficult than I always figured it would be. :p I'm prone to overexaggerating things tho. :p

I think for job interviews, employers will notice your clothes more than your braces. So, be sure to wear something that is modest yet stylish, professional, and fits you well. :)

Also, aren't braces much more professional looking than crooked teeth?

I'm 22 as well, haven't been to job interviews, but in my experience at college, no one notices that much. I have had A LOT more people say 'I wish I had gotten braces' than say anything about waiting too long. And really braces don't detract from professionalism--that comes from attitude, not what you're wearing on your teeth!

I try to do that as well. Or rather, one day at a time. It's a slow process, but the good things always start out slow. If that makes sense. :)

I'm actually excited to see what I'll look like in the end. :p

I'm 22 as well and have been braced for three months... don't worry, it takes awhile but you'll get used to them! And just think about the beautiful teeth you'll have in the end :) Good luck! Hope it goes well for you :)

did your orthodontist say you would be getting your arch expanded?

If not you've got nothing to fret over. Usually they do that before braces and they surly would have mentioned it to you at some point.

Yes, they told me I have to get it. It's what should be going on at my next appointment. I had heard the nurses talking about putting it in but also putting the brackets on my top teeth. They went all the way, with wires and bands. I asked about that, said I thought that the expander had to go in first; I don't remember the nurse's reply exactly. I did think that was out of order, but I don't know how it works. I just figure they know what they're doing.
