Braces at 27!! i thought of them for years. i hated to smile because my teeth are that bad. they are class II malocclusion- severe overcrowding :/ have absolutely no confidence due to my teeth but now i'm glad that i have them. due to severe overcrowding for years, i'm sure i'll need some more expensive dental work because my teeth have tiny stains but oh well! it has to be done. :) congrats for finally getting them! i feel old at 27 w braces...they'll prob be off by 30 but it's ok, some say we look younger w them on ;D lolol!!!

Congrats, BrokenSadieBell! 27 is very young...I'm in my 40s so you are way ahead.

I'm curious what factors were involved in your decisions to get the full package braces (i.e., 2+ years) vs. the 6 month braces (which I have)? I don't think I would have gone through with braces had the conventional ones been my only option.

I'm doing pretty well, by the way. No more pain and I'm eating a little better (no chicken or chewy things) but I find that my clear brackets stain really easily so that saag paneer might be off limits for a while...and going into winter with no red wine is really quite sad.

I'm certainly smiling more than ever :) With the ceramic braces, they're not very noticeable beyond a distance of about 10 feet. And it's amazing how fast they start to straighten the teeth out. After two months, my upper teeth looked great! :-*

My lower braces go on just after New Years... and I'm looking forward to it

I've heard that given the preference, an orthodontist generally prefers to go with all metal. I can understand why, as the ceramic braces seem to stand out a lot more, and I've been told they are more prone to breaking.

Good for you for choosing to get braces! I'm sure even with them, your smile looks great. And yeah... it is kinda' fun to look like a teenager

Glad to see I'm not the only one in my 40s to be getting braces! They're getting put on next month, and expectation of 3 years - which means I'll be 50 when they come off! My teeth are a little crowded but the big reason for doing it is that my bite is off. My dentist basically scared me into going to the orthodontist, saying that there was a chance that with my bite, and if it continued to move, I'd have issues with my teeth that maybe couldn't be corrected.

I was hoping to be able to do invisalign, but the ortho said I could do those, only if I didn't want my bite to be corrected, and since that's the main driver for this 'joyous journey' - regular braces it is.

So thanks, everyone, for posting your stories. It's really good to know that I'm not the only one doing this at an 'advanced' age!

I got my first adjustment today. I expected to have extra soreness and pain; while having the new wires put on (especially bottom) hurt like a @#$!, I'm feeling ok now...ate lunch and so far, so good. :) Seeing some alignment on the bottom...woo! 5 months to go.

After three months, it still feels a little strange going to an office where the only other patients I've ever seen in the waiting room... are kids. Heavens, the last time I was there I couldn't figure out how to use their computer to check in, and a 10 year old boy had to help me

I really does help to hear about other people's experiences, doesn't it? There's much to be said for online support groups!

BracedinNOLA - my situation sounds a lot like yours. My teeth were sliding against each other and my dentist was having to put filling behind them at every appointment. He said that pretty soon there wouldn't be much left for the fillings to stick to unless I corrected my bite. I think we are the same age too.

11 months in - just had another adjustment and it was the most painful one so far. Wow, they really beat on my lower teeth! He readjusted some arch wires down there and I'm now wearing a power chain on the lowers. This time I chose white . I got in the car and looked in the mirror, and I could already see where my teeth had moved! I'm also wearing elastics from the back molar to the top incisors. It's quite a pull. I hope the brackets on my molars can take the stress. Needless to say I won't be eating anything hard for quite a while.

Hope you are all doing well with your braces. Enjoy the holidays!
Class II moderately deep overbite, mild crowding.
Braced on January 19, 2011. Debraced on December 16, 2013.

OK, so today is the day I go in to have my lower braces put on! I've already apologized in advance to my family for whining and being cranky over the next few weeks.

My entire family had the flu over Christmas break, and this bug was slow moving - and I caught it slightly after Christmas day. I was pretty sure I'd be a mess by today, but I seem to have fought it off as of yesterday. I didn't want to postpone this appointment, because it would take weeks to get another one, and I just want to get on with it. The sooner the braces go on, the sooner they go off.

OK... to time to to the appointment ...

... and the lower braces are on! It seemed to go by much more quickly this time, and I pretty much knew the drill. I don't think I could ever get used to that thing they shove in your mouth to hold it open. Oddly enough, when I first left the office, it was my upper teeth that hurt the most. But now, a few hour later, the lower teeth are letting me know they're not happy about having to move

I knew my lower teeth were the most messed up, but seeing how crooked the lower arch wire is, is shocking! I meanders around all over the place, and trying to get a proxy brush in there to clean is non trivial. Glad I have a WaterPik to help with the cleaning!

As my grandmother used to say, "It hurts to be beautiful!"
