7 days in braces - Cuts

#1 Post by SlothCvddles »

:( :-+ Hi guys!

My name is Maxine and I’m 18, I got my braces on Thursday April 26th, 2018. I’ve needed them for years and finally got them! My chief complaint was my overbite that was made worse after removing my wisdom teeth. It is 90-95% overbite.

Okay so I have ulcers on my cheeks and a chopped up raw bottom lip! I’ve tried over the counter and salt water.

What is honestly killing me the most is my coil spring on my bottom right front teeth (I had a tooth that was behind some teeth) it’s almost completely out! Now with that, the wire has spread and the pain has become unbearable. My bottom lip on the right side is completely raw as all hell, serrated and bloody. And it hurts SO MUCH.

dental wax will not stay put and I have a lot of saliva so I’m sure that doesn’t help.

And the pieces that do stay, it takes days to get it all out.

What can I do? I am at a lost and I want to rip my coil out. I see my orthodontist in 2 months and I’ll probably have a bracket replacing it. But I cannot handle this. And I can’t get use to it. I thought I went through the worst of it the first week I couldn’t eat anything and I couldn’t bite down. I saw a hygienist at my orthodontists due to needing another bite guard and wanting to change elastics as I felt like the pink was too subtle and I couldn’t see it, it looked silver. So now I have beautiful teal ones (: she said I could get a prescription faxed. So I called and never heard back.

I also have canker sores lining the sides of my tongues and I’ve tried everything to get rid of them but they keep rubbing on the brackets and bite guards on the top.

I’m gonna lose my mind I swear to god.

SOMEONE HELP MEEEE.

Poor thing! Have you tried salt water rinses? There are also mouthwashes for mouth sores and other mouth irritations. I have one called Orajel Analgesic & Astringent Rinse. It doesn't taste all that pleasant, but it does dull the pain for a short while. You can also buy gels to rub on your gums, inside of cheeks etc. that will numb the area for awhile. Look for something called "oral pain relief gel". These should all be available in a well-stocked drugstore/pharmacy in the dental section.

I hope things will get better for you soon -- that must be miserable. I have some irritated areas in my mouth from time to time (especially after sleeping on one side pretty hard, causing the brackets & elastics to cut into my cheeks, but nothing as bad as what you are dealing with. :(

I found that Iglu gel was quite effective and sticky, good at persistently remaining on ulcers / canker sores, where as Bonjela and similar tends to come off very quickly and the pain returns. One thing about Iglu it though is that its quite like brace wax in texture, to the point if you're also using wax on a problem area, it and the iglu can stick to and remove each other!
I ended up just using iglu on its own and rubbing it right into the ulcers - painful when you first apply it but the anaesthetic in the gel numbs it quite quickly. This gave some relief for a while and at least allowed me to get through things like eating and sleeping comfortably.

I believe Iglu do a version of especially for brace sufferers but I've not tried it yet, the ordinary stuff which I've used for years has worked just fine. Maybe the braces version is even better, who knows.

Some people are just more prone to mouth ulcers than others apparently, and having all that metal and square edges pressed against delicate lips and cheeks is not a good combination if you're one of those people.

I hope you're feeling better by now.
