Another oldie here - second time around, 44 years old

#1 Post by DoubleDecaf »

I had ceramic braces on my top teeth when I was 21. I hated my smile as a kid but my dentist kept telling me it was just vanity. Went to see an orthodontist when I was an adult and had 4 wisdom teeth out and 2 premolars on the top. I couldn't face having another 2 out on the bottom (that would be EIGHT in total) so just went with braces on the top. Pretty much regretted it for the next 20-something years! Although I was thrilled with my top teeth.

I was told to stop wearing my retainer after a few years back then and of course my top teeth moved a bit. So this time I thought I'd do it right and have Damon metal brackets top and bottom - put on today! Not unbearably sore yet, it's been 8 hours. Estimated treatment time is 12 months (but of course I know that could stretch out!).

Getting full metal seemed like a good idea but now I'm regretting it a bit...maybe ceramic would have been better at my age...

Oh well, too late now

Welcome! I should have done this 20+ years ago! I have a bit more of a complicated case. I have 2 impacted canines..so I'm hoping I'm not too old for them to be pulled down into place and am just hoping they are not fused to the bone!

Me too! I am 35 years old and I also have 2 impacted canines. I get my top set with expander tomorrow. Very nervous about it.

Welcome !Its not the braces that are the hard part to be honest.. that would be easy if that is all it was, compared to the uncertainty of my 2 canines not coming down at this age. There is a board called IMPACTED CANINES CLUB that you should come check out.

I was worried about that too. They had referred me to a periodontist in their office. He hooked me up with a CT scan at no cost to me to see if the teeth were fused to the bone. In his opinion, he said no, they didn't appear to be fused and he felt they would move once things were set in motion. So I was able to get peace of mind before making an expensive decision.

I had a 3D pan done, and same thing - the Orthodontist said looks good.. however the surgeon told me that no one can tell by scans or even during surgery if the teeth are fused or not. So here's to praying they move!
