Hi all! I've been gone awhile trying to finish up a class I was taking.

sjeanine - I get the same responses. When I tell people I'm getting braces they look at me and say "but your teeth aren't crooked" in this suspicious way. I just know they're thinking to themselves that I must be getting scammed, LOL!

GRILLZ - yep, same here. Lots of crowns and my front teeth are chiseled paper thin. My dentist said that soon even veneers won't be possible because there won't be anything back there to work with. That's what finally made up my mind. I may be old for braces, but I'm too young for dentures and implants!

Kittywalker3 - I'm funding mine through Flex Spending also. The pretax makes a big difference. My payroll deduction isn't nearly as much as I thought it would be.

So I got my braces today! My teeth aren't really sore yet but my cheeks are starting to feel raw. He put a contraption in the back called a something-tail (forgot the name) to correct my bite, so I can't bite together at all. I have to eat soft foods for 8 weeks and then it will come off. About the crowns: I have 4 crowns in the back and 2 veneers in front. He was going to band the molars, but because my teeth are so tight they could not get the spacers in my teeth. It was quite an ordeal. I was so afraid one of those crowns was going to pop right off. Finally he gave up and decided to go the bracket route instead. That was last week. He had to do a few extra steps with the adhesive and scruff up the surface a bit, so it was a longer process, but it went okay. The worst part was wearing that torture device in my mouth for half an hour while they prepared my teeth.

I'll be spending a lot more time on this site now. I have so many questions that I forgot to ask. Good luck to you all and I'll catch up this weekend. I'm exhausted and going to bed.

Congrats on Brace day. :-*

Im 43 and with the same scenario of crowns and fix em now or get dentures sooner than later so when people say "you got Braces" I give them the full metal smile proudly.
I must say I have only had positive comments by friends and colleagues.
Brace day was good for me and day two as well but Day 3 was OMG........ I couldnt tap my front top and bottom teeth together without pain. I quickly went and bought Tylenol and was fortunate that I told my Ortho's assistant that I was leaving on day 2 for Florida so she grabbed me a looong strip of wax that I packed....not the 3" lil box but a full 12"strip. :-** thank you!
At night I pulled off a chunk and packed both sides to sleep. It worked great. Only on day 3 & 4 did I need tylenol and then things calmed down. I quickly got used to the new feeling of hardware in my mouth and no wax or painkillers since.

But I did want to cry :-(( (ok not physically but mentally) that it took almost 20 minutes to floss with the threader they give you.
Do yourself a favour and go grab some superfloss or equivalent as this will cut your time by more than 1/2.

There are highs and lows but I am still smiling on day 9 now.

I hope you Pass assuming there was a test at the end of the class  and keep us posted on your progress

Hey Goin4it!

I wondered how you were doing. So you felt no pain til the third day? I was almost disappointed today that I felt no pain. Sounds crazy but I want to FEEL that something is happening. Well, I had a dull headache and the insides of my lips are sore, but that's it. Ugh, the floss! I haven't even attempted that yet. It was hard enough flossing before the braces. I haven't even gone through my goody bag yet, or tried the wax. I must be a masochist :). My upper and lower teeth don't meet at all because of this tail thing. I wish they would've told me about this. I wasn't prepared to not be able to chew for 8 weeks. I had to go to the store today and buy all soft foods. All I can think about are foods I can't eat. I craved nachos, beef jerky and Skittles all day today. I'm obsessed, actually.

So can you tell if your teeth have moved? I keep hearing from people that they noticed movement right away. I don't know how they can tell. I can't see beyond the metal.

Funny you ask, as I did notice that they moved but they are more like fangs then they were prior. Not huge but definitley different. It appears that they are being straightened and then they will be tucked back in line.

Still fairly pain free. How are you doing?

Day 3 and I'm really feeling it in the front teeth, but nothing unbearable. I'm starting to hate these turbo tail things. I can't bite together to chew anything. And now that I'm not wearing my bite splint at night, I'm gnashing like crazy on these things. I woke myself up this morning to something snapping in my mouth. I realized I was biting down hard on the turbos and something either broke or snapped. I don't feel anything loose though. I hope it wasn't a bottom tooth. Flossing only took me an hour. Next time I'm going to floss on the couch so my feet don't get sore, lol! I used the threader, next time I'll try the superfloss. I think they might be moving though. The roof of my mouth feels roomier. I love the pain. It means they're moving! This dancing banana kills me.

You should call your Ortho and tell them what happened and see if you need to go it if its was a break or a snap...better safe than sorry.

I have a bite plate (retainer) that I need to use at home and for sleeping as well as eating. I thought it would drive me nuts and I wouldn't be able to sleep but on the contrary, I sleep like a baby.
Eating on the other hand is a joke. It feels terrible, I cant chew properly and everything gets underneath it on the roof of my mouth. Its only for a month +\+ so I am sticking to smoothies, mashed potatoes, soup and plain chicken breast cut into itty bitty pieces as I find myself not chewing and swallowing stuff whole .....such as Mac & cheese and sliced hard boiled egg. I am trying to keep my protein up.

I am glad you mentioned the sore feet as I thought it was just me who took so long to floss that the body aches.

When I was in the Hotel I had to stretch over the large counter to see my teeth closer in the mirror and by the time I finished I needed to lay down.
I will say that although I am not in great shape I thought I should be able to floss without resting after. :-Z
I am telling you once you try the superfloss and it takes 1/2 the time you will love it

I hate to even ask this.. but do you ever cheat and take out the bite plate when eating? I'd be tempted. But, if it's only for a month - doesn't seem like it's so bad!

I highly recommend Crest Glide floss - it's like superfloss!

What does the bite plate do?

So I realized I've been doing the floss thing all wrong. I was forcing the threader between my teeth at the gum line and pulling it through. Then I found a website with a demo and I figured out that the threader just gets the floss under the wire so you can pull it down between the teeth like normal! Duhh... No wonder my gums were so sore!

My turbo tails/bites, whatever they are called, are driving me nuts. I can't chew anything. Eating isn't even enjoyable anymore and I've lost 4 pounds already. I can't live on yogurt and mashed potatoes for 7 more weeks! I'm going crazy!

The bite plate is basically a retainer that is built up so there is a ledge behind the front teeth.

What this does is prevent the top teeth from biting off the bottom braces when there is an overbite. Now instead of my top teeth coming down over the bottom it hits the top plate and has to stop.
I tried posting a link to show some styles but it wouldnt post the whole link so you would be lost wondering where I was sending you. :-+ .....good thing I previewed post before submitting

If you Google "bite plate for braces" you will see the general idea of the design.

Sorry I couldnt link or post a pic for you. :-=

Oh, you poor thing. It really looks uncomfortable! My turbo bites serve a similar purpose but they're attached to my back molars. I don't think I would like that thing touching the roof of my mouth. You only have to wear it a month, right? I knew braces would be sort of painful, but I didn't realize there were so many other contraptions involved that make it impossible to eat and talk. On the bright side, I have lost some weight. :)

The plate itself is not bad and stops me from grinding at night so thats a good thing.

I though I was fully informed too but you dont know until it hits you want you can, and can't eat even though its soft its just not worth the work to clean after.
I am also turning the negative side of braces into positive weight loss.
Its actually funny as although I have lost weight people didnt realize how heavy I was. I have always had very broad, square shoulders so I can carry the pounds.
I have lost 15 already and am going to go for total of 30 or so. :yikes: Doc's orders,
Yes this is drastic weight loss but I am fortunate that my sister is a clinical nutritionalist and I got the green light from my Dr. as my physical and blood work were clean and she wanted the 30 off.

The drastic drop is because its too much work to clean my braces so I am eating less crap..smoothies are replacing bagels and cheese among others

Thanks for the PM. I followed your story and you sound a lot like myself. I had bite plates for over a year although I did take them out. I got where I became quite accustomed to them. Overall my brace experience was good. It was exciting to see the changes and I'm quite happy with the end result. I'm much healthier and happier than I was pre-brace.

It is well worth it.

Way to go with the weight loss! Sometimes all it takes is one event to get the momentum going. I crave food constantly now, and I'm eating too much soup and processed foods that have lots of sodium. Not good for my tinnitus. 5 more weeks and this bite thing comes off! Nachos!

I'm becoming quite the whiz with flossing now. Don't even need the threader, except for the very back teeth where I can't get my hand in my mouth. But my mouth is so dry now. Do you have that problem? I wonder if it's because the braces sort of force my mouth open more.

One of the techs at my orthodontist's told me that she'd had to have braces about ten years ago because as people age sometimes their bite starts collapsing and that causes the chipping and stuff.

I'm 35 and my braces went on December 9th.
