Hi everybody :)

#1 Post by TheShmo »

Hi! I am 25 years old, and got my spacers put in today (I will be getting my braces on next week, on March 7th). I had braces when I was in junior high, but my teeth never really got straight (I have a cross-bite that was never corrected), plus I wasn't too faithful w/ my retainers as a teenager, so here I go again!
Last time, I had the rubber spacers... this time they used the metal ones, which I must say are quite a bit more uncomfortable! My teeth are aching like I already have my braces on.... eeek, I can't imagine what it will be like when I actually do get them (I am kind of a sissy LOL I had to skip school for a day when I had them the first time!)
I have some cosmetic bonding on my 3 front teeth (to cover gaps that didn't close w/ the braces last time), which I get removed the night before the braces go on, but that shouldn't be too bad... I am just glad I don't have to go w/out it more than a day :)
Anyway, sorry to ramble! I just wanted to introduce myself, and say how glad I am to find this site... hope to speak w/ you all soon!
~Kysha

The funny thing is, I had never heard about the salt water rinses! My teeth are sore from my spacers, so last night b4 bed, I gave it a try, and was amazed at how well it worked! I must say, I wish I DID know that the first time around :D

W:yikes:W!!! That would've made your 1st treatment much more bearable!
But better late than never, right?
In my own experience, the rinse feels better when the water temp is more towards "hot" than "warm". It's worth a shot.
Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Hey I was reading this post and I can so relate to the poster soreness...I had my spacers put on like 3 days ago and I'm having alot of soreness too...I can't wait to get these things out! So with these salt rinses do you just mix it yourself? Is it over the counter? Sorry I know these are dumb questions but I'm new to all of this braces stuff.

You should be able to rinse as often as necessary. There shouldn't be (or at least in my own experience there haven't been) any adverse effects from rinsing too often. No "over-salting" yet. :P

Anyway you make it yourself (I keep a container of morton salt under my bathroom sink) and mix approx 1 teaspoon salt (I just eye-ball it) and fill the rest of your cup with warm-to-hot water. I personally swish 3 to 4 mouthfuls per session, swishing each mouthful for about 30 seconds. I usually follow it by brushing because the salt water tastes like i've been to the ocean. :D

Hope this helps, let me know how it goes!

Thanks for the welcome :) I only have 3 days left w/ the spacers, and my mouth is FINALLY not sore (the rinses definitely have helped... plus I got a waterpik, and find it very soothing to my gums). Now the only complaint I have is that they are starting to get loose, and I can feel them wiggling between my teeth LOL But THAT I can handle :) I am definitely looking forward to this coming Wednesday!
