Im in braces for the same reason. Once done with the grill, or sometime during the process I'll get started on 2 implants. I'm trying to talk to my DDS about 2 implants and then a 2 tooth bridge to replace my long gone front teeth. - lost them 35 years ago in bike accident.

If you're going to do two implants then why would you want a two-tooth bridge? I.e., why not just one tooth per implant?

I didn't explain the whole scenerio. I currently have caps on both lateral incisors, with a 2 tooth bridge spanning across my missing central incisors.

The caps and bridge are about 16 years old, and it would be difficult to replace the whole thing with another same set updue to teeth shifting forward etc.

To start the braces work, they cut and removed the 2 front teeth from the bridge, so I have 2 flipper teeth, attached to my arch wires, that have to be changed out at each wire change.

so the plan is braces to correct my arch, re align the rest of the teeth, and then the restorative work,

My DDS is all about tooth conservation,,
He wanted to replace 1 cap, with an implant, then a 1 tooth bridge for one central incisor, then implant the other, and leave the old cap-lateral incisor.
It makes no sense to me, to go thru the braces hassle, and then not fix everything, so I am pushing hard for to have both lateral incisors implanted, and a 2 tooth -centrals- bridge,
I'd rather go the extra mile now, so might as well build a 4 tooth replacement system then to have to deal with this when the remaining cap fails.
I have him seeing the issue from my perpective, but am sure the discussions will continue.

When I am done with all of this, I am also getting a bridge--to fill in where I have a missing molar. I would far prefer an implant, but my understanding is that if it's been too long--over 20 years in my case--that the bone will have receded too much, and therefore, an implant is no longer an option.

I had a dental implant placed in the front/bottom (right of center) at the end of July. I had to have consultations with 2 different surgeons before one of them decided they would do it for me. My jaw bone width is very small, 5mm at it's widest, but the average being 3mm. They did have to do bone grafting.

I chose to have the implant done before surgery (surgery date Nov.4) so that I will have optimal stability in my bite post surgery (I have very weak TMJs). My surgeon was great and I have had no problems with the implant! The graft healed very quickly and I very rarely even think about titanium post in my jaw.

Getting the implant did take planning on the parts of both my implant surgeon, my jaw surgeon, and my orthodontist (my jaw surgeon is on the other side of the country).

I was told that as long as the implant isn't in a site where incision will be made during surgery they are OK up to 3 months pre-op.

PJ - On not doing implant if it's been 20 years since loss of tooth, I had a molar implant after 20 years, was more like 35 years. I had to have a bone implant first. I was told that if you don't get a dental implant soon after losing the tooth, you lose jaw bone. And if that happens, you get bone implant.

The article from Dr Ted was very interesting to read.

I am thinking of having a dental implant to replace my UR6 now I have finished with braces. Now my bite has been corrected it feels odd to have a missing tooth, I did ask about a denture but my dentist told me that would be too bulky.

My dentist does not do the procedure but can refer me to someone who can and they will assess whether my case is suitable for an implant. I had my UR6 extracted in my early 20's & I am now 55.

So I'd better start saving some pennies!

Dental Implants: Part 5: I get the implant and crown next we

#12 Post by drted »

Thank you. I'm happy you found my implant photo documentation story to your liking.http://drted.com/Implant%20treatment%20 ... %20Ted.htm I am enjoying doing the story and am happy to report that this coming week I am going to have the abutment screwed into my implant and the crown cemented on the abutment. You can be sure I will document this grand finle with great happines. Even though I am an orthodontist I have learned much about the implant procedure, because I had to have a graft to begin with. You might be interested in knowing that the doctor who did the graft and placed the implant gave me a "colleague dscount". I paid him $600. and the lab that made the abutment and the crown (titanium, not zirconium) gave me 20% discount. Nevetheless, I will have to pay the lab $400. My colleague is going to finish the work. Consequently, my implant has cost me $1000. I venture to say the typical cost to patients would have totaled $3300 -$4000 for the work I have had done. I could have chosen to have a simple bridge (cost to me $200) because the back abutment tooth is already a crown. However, the front abutment is a perfectly normal and healthy tooth so I elected to have the implant instead. Moreover, I have had the pleasure of teaching others persons exactly how it is done in every detail. Your enjoyment of my story is no less eqeal to the pleasure I have receive in telling it. Wow, Dr. Ted, that was a really interesting read! I've never thought about the fact that dentists can also be dental patients, before. What a neat perspective to read.

Dear lilone:
I'm almost done: My lab work cameback on Feb. 17, 2011 so I posted all the photos and explanation of what is going to happen next week (placement of the abutment in the implant and cementing the crown on the implant. Even though I am an orthodontist and have a familiarity with implants having it actually done on me and documenting it at the same time and sharing it with others has been and exciting and educational experience. I can hardly wait until the big day arrives next week so I can take the last photos and prudly show off my new "baby" Cordially Dr. Ted
