So I am really confused on this one. Will have to ask my Ortho at my next appointment but I got my hyrax rapid pallatal expander today. I asked the tech who installed it if the doc mentioned in my chart how long I will be wearing it. She said it depends on what he sees as far as progression goes. I mentioned having read on a few different places that people seem to have them somewhere between 4 months and a year so I was just curious. She (the tech) looked at me like I was crazy and said "Oh no, it won't be anywhere near that long!" When the Ortho came over, he said he wants me to turn it once a day for one week then twice for the following week and if its done its job we will take it off, if not, we wait a week and check again.
Now, everything I have read says that it takes about 2 to 4 weeks to fully expand but that they generally keep it on an additional few months just to make sure the expansion sticks and the new bone fills in. Which makes perfect sense. Why then, would my Orthodontist take it off so soon? (Don't get me wrong. I hate it already but still..I want it to not be a waste of time!)
Is this normal for a Hyrax RPE?
Hyrax expander for only 2 weeks?..
