mild open-bite treatment?

#1 Post by bmueller »

After wearing braces with tons of elastics and a year of retention, my open bite is creeping back. Wondering if invisalign is an option for me for closing the open bite (I would say 0 mm overlap for one tooth).

Also, would this require elastics again or can invisalign pull the front teeth down without brackets and triangle elastics?

Hello Bmueller,

I am sorry that I cannot help you with your question, I just wanted to say that I feel sorry for you that your open bite is creeping back. Maybe you can make an appointment with your ortho to see what your options are? I wish you very good luck!

Greetings from Anna

I know Invisalign always seems to be expanding what its technology can achieve, so I think it's worth talking to an ortho to see if that's a viable way to correct the open bite. If you want to go that route, though, I'd definitely seek out an ortho who has extensive experience with Invisalign, since they would know best how to achieve the results you want (or if it's even possible with Invisalign).

I had a deep bite when I started, which shifted to open after I went through my first phase of treatment with Carriere distalizers, and my bite closed down within the first couple trays of Invisalign, so I'd imagine it's possible. Good luck!

I hate to rain on your parade but wouldn't invisalign make an open bite worse? This is because the plastic is interfering with you biting down totally. This is why a lot of orthos don't use clear "invisalign" type essix retainers when they finish open bite cases. If I were you, I'd get clear regular braces or lingual braces and then get a Hawley retainer afterwards and/or bonded retainers.

When used properly, Invisalign is actually my choice of appliance to correct open bites. The stability with it and the speed of treatment are the main reasons. Here is a link to a severe open bite closure with Invisalign. With the proper experience and planning, an orthodontist can help you close your open bite.

Unless some front to back positioning is needed to aid in the fit of the teeth, you likely will not need elastics and can do it with just good aligner wear.

One of the things you'll want to assess with your orthodontist is why the open bite is returning to ensure the final result is as stable as it can be (i.e. rule out joint problems, etc.)
