Question a/b Root canal & crown during Invisalign treatm

#1 Post by Beautyguru »

Hi there,
I've never posted before, new user. Looks to be a reputable site for peer to peer information re: Invisalign.

I'm 8 months into Invisalign treatment. al us going swimmingly. No pain no issues. Last week I had been having throbbing pain in upper left quadrants and shoot pain up side of my face causing horrendous headaches- made an emergency appt with the dentist todat they took Xrays, found an infection and and told me I have to get a rool canal- to call an endo specialst.
ok- no sweat. anything to get rid of the pain.

I just read up on root canals on webMD and it turns out they place a crown (cap) on your tooth to seal it afterwards. Now for any of you that have gotten a crown before you know they shave it down first- like they would with a veneer, make a mold for the crown and send it to a lab to get it produced.

my question- hos will this new crown affect my Invisalign aligners? I have 11 months of treatment left and now my tooth will not match the aligners, right?

I know i will talk to my Invisalign speaciilaist on Monday and I will mention to the Endo when we meet that i have Invisalign and the 2 doctors need to consult with one another, but my gut is telling me the tooth shape wont be the same and wont fit in my aligner.

has anyone had a root canal/crown during Invisalign treatment that would be comfortable sharing their experience?

I thank you in advance for any response you have.

If you have the crown placed you may need to have a mid-course correction with invisalign. i.e. more impressions and they have to make new aligners to fit the new crown.

As mentioned, a new impression will be needed since it is virtually impossible for the new crown to match exactly the position and shape of your current tooth.

Depending on your Invisalign provider, there may or may not be a cost associated with taking your impression, since this is outside the normal course of treatment.

Good luck!

Hi there,

Just to reassure you, although you may well need a mid course correction once you have your new crown and aligners there is no problem with tooth movement. I have 2 root canals and a crown on a metal post and all of them have moved exactly as prescribed.

Good Luck.

I went to a dentist for my Invisalign partly because I will need crowns on 2 of my upper molars soon and I didn't want to have to go back and forth between doctors if I needed the crowns during Invisalign. I asked the dentist and he said if I needed a crown during treatment he would place a temporary crown until the end of treatment.

So I guess they could put a smaller crown on temporarily for you. At least the aligner will fit. If it's not a tooth that is moving a lot maybe you won't need the mid course refinement.
