Any Tooth Grinders Using Invisalign?

#1 Post by TakingThePlunge »

I am a serious tooth grinder/clencher and have to wear a mouthpiece at night. Initially I had one of those hard ones, but after breaking it twice, I switched to a rubber one, which works well.

I am set to get my aligners next week. I am a bit worried that I will clench the aligners and break them during the night. I was only going to do the top, but later decided to use Invisalign on both top and bottom teech, so I won't be able to wear my mouthpiece at night.

My dentist didn't seem to be concerned, but I'm scared that I will bite right through these aligners. Has anyone had this problem?

I am a hardcore clencher and I do grind my teeth at night as well and I have had no problems whatsoever. No rips, holes, I haven't ground through the aligners or come close to it. They are sturdier than they look, trust me.

That is good to hear. I got my first aligners today, so tonight will be my first test with my grinding. Sounds like it shouldn't be a problem!

I'm a terrible grinder, day and night.

I'm only on day 6 but I think I can feel like the section covering an incissor has bent outwards on the inside of my mouth ie it doesn't hug the tooth like it did.

I'm going to have a word with my dentist in a couple of weeks.

How are you getting on now?

Teeth Grinding

I am on #7 of 10 trays and have had no problem with grinding. No breakage, etc. They are alot tougher than I expected.

Funnily enough I think I have developed a habit of clenching my teeth together since I have had the aligners. It is almost like I am constantly pressing my teeth together to make sure that the aligners are seated properly on my teeth.

Grinding isn't a bad thing!

Using Invisalign, you don't have to worry about grinding. The trays are quite strong and used for only two weeks at a time. We have some severe bruxers who have not had any problems with the trays.

In fact, patients who grind their teeth are actually good candidates for Invisalign since there is full coverage over the teeth. Hence you won't be using a night guard during your treatment. The fact that they are constantly biting into the aligners means that there is more likely a snug fit. This is a similar effect to using the aligner chewies.

Good luck!
