invisalign - drinking

#1 Post by flattop »

I just got my first set of aligners. I'm having the usual problems (slight pain & increase saliva), but so far so good. I am worried about some of the posts from unhappy users. It does seem that, like traditional braces, individual results are the norm.

My question is about drinking. Do I really have to remove the aligners evertime I want to drink something unless it is water? I understand removing them for food, but simply drinking too? I drink diet cola and I'm going through withdrawl because I don't want to keep taking out the aligners to have a drink.

even diet drinks hacve high acid contact. So if you drink with the aligners in place the acid will stay on your teeth for a longer period of time and disolve them more.

drinking with aligners

Hi flattop,

I will be on aligner no. 8 tomorrow and have been drinking mostly diet coke since the beginning (with aligners in). I heard that drinking through a straw will help keep the drink off your teeth, but I don't always use a straw.

I know Dr Rick is correct, saying that the acid will sit on your teeth but so far I've had no problems. I just went in for a teeth cleaning, xrays, etc and they told me that the aligners seem to be protecting my teeth. They were in better shape now than ever before.

After the initial aligners, the aligners seem to loosen up quicker. For example, when you start on aligner no. 2, it should fit tight at first but a few days later it should feel loose enough to be easy to pop in and out. Making it much easier to remove them for snacks. But, like I said, I leave mine in. Later I may take them out to rinse and replace.

Hope this helps. Best of luck with your aligners. I have a journal about mine if you want to read it.

I didn't take them out when drinking anything but dark red drinks that would stain them. Just make sure you brush your teeth and the aligners several times a day and you should be ok.

Although, it might be a good time to cut back on your soda intake. I know I lost a few pound when I first started invisalign and it was wonderful. I stopped snacking all the time!

I did find that I could eat certain fruits with the aligners in, like bananas and grapes. But it was pretty uncomfortable to eat with the aligners in, and food always got stuck under them, so it was usually less of a pain to take them out than to clean all the gunk out later.
