Partially Erupted & Braces?

Hello 
I am currently 35 years old looking at getting braces fitted privately - hopefully when I can find an orthodontist available to do this
My dentist tells me I have a partially erupted canine behind a baby tooth (the other side of my teeth has come completely through, though again behind a baby tooth).
I just wondered what treatment you guys have had and how long it took for the partially erupted tooth to come down? Also, did your orthodontist leave your baby teeth in and wait for the tooth to come down, or did they extract them first and then put the braces on?
How long was your treatment altogether?
