Lower jaw expansion for crowded teeth.

#1 Post by Copyman77 »

Hello, I have an overbite + overjet and receded lower jaw. My ortho said i need to have 2 lower incisors exrtracted before having surgery since there isnt enough space to alling my teeth. I really dont want to have teeth extracted since my jaw is very narrow already and i feel its gonna make things worse. Would expanding the lower jaw be a viable alternative or is extractions the only possible way to fix crowding? Im 24 btw.

Extracting two incisors seems extreme, especially given the photos. I think the most important thing is to get at least a second opinion and treatment plan. I'd never approve an extraction and surgery plan without knowing that's the consensus, but maybe you already have done that. Good luck!

Jaw expansion is possible, you just need to find a good surgeon willing to do it and is familiar with it. I would check out MSDO if I were you, it's surgically expanding the mandible. You are better off with a hybrid distractor instead of a tooth one to prevent relapse in my opinion. These surgeries are very uncommon in the US (many surgeons say it can't be done) and I"ve heard more stories being in Europe, Germany, or Poland for example for people who like medical tourism. If you check out KLS Martin website, they offer two distraction options- the Bologna midline distractor (a hybrid tooth and bone one), and a Rotterdam midline distractor (purely bone, so more morbidity).

I would suggest reading up studies such as these to get an idea of what expansion is like. It sounds like a great way to avoid extractions and instead expand and retract the proclined teeth. I read on jawsurgeryforums about someone who used a mandibular midline osteotomy precisely for the reason of making enough space to fix proclined incisors to prevent extractions. I feel like it would be a much better option than extractions if you don't mind a longer wait time. Can allow for upper jaw expansion as well if there is no discrepancy between the two.
