So long story short, my doc wanted May 1st to work out but a last-minute update on my sleep study pushed things until June 10th. As such, I'm now part of the JUNE 2015 surgery buddy group and I'll be posting on that thread :) Good luck peeps still scheduled for May!

Hello everyone! Former lurker and newly this registered member here. I'm pretty anxious about my SARPE coming up on May 14th. It's going to be in a notoriously poor service hospital and I'm really worried about the level of care..

My sister is a nurse in a neighbouring hospital and we were expecting and hoping to go there so she could pop in periodically through the day and insure her nurse friends were taking care of me (she worked for 5 years on the post surgical ward.) Not only that, she's leaving for a month in Europe 2 days after my surgery. I won't have much help during my recovery :(

And last but not least, my boyfriend and I broke up on Sunday. He was supposed to be there before and after.

I have some pretty severe crowding on top and bottom. Class II malocclusion and crossbite.

Treatment so far:
March 17th : extraction of my lower 7's (last molars before wisdom teeth) they were impacted and quite decayed so the ortho decided to extract instead of subluxate and move my 8's (wisdom teeth) into their place.

April 7th: lower braces on just the 5,6 and 8 to close the gap.

May 4th: lower wires changed.

May 7th: RPE will be cemented.

May 14th: SURGERY!!

So far I've stocked up on squeeze pouches of Apple sauce, Mac n cheese, soup and protein shakes. Also picked up 3 ice packs with straps and liquid Tylenol, ibuprofen, and decongestant.

Ziya, I remember feeling just like you only a couple of months ago. It will all be fine, don't worry. I only wish I'd had someone with me the day of the surgery as the nurses were so busy, but you seem to have that sorted. Good luck. It's not as bad as you think it's going to be, no special equipment or food needed afterwards. Just fill your freezer with soup and your cupboards with macaroni xxxx

My double jaw surgery was 12 days ago, on May 27. I had braces on for about 18 months prior, and it's expected the braces will stay on until the end of this year.

The surgery went well, according to the surgeon. However, the recovery time has been not fun at all. I was in the hospital for two days. Whenever I'd get out of bed, I'd drip blood badly from my nose. I'd also drool badly. But all the ice, and the pain meds, kept me sleeping much of those two days. It's all kind of like a dream.

When I got home, I was having troubles breathing. My nose was almost fully plugged, and breathing through the clamped mouth is not an option. Some nasal spray helped a bit, but I wheezed a lot for a few days. That seems to have mostly cleared up.

The base pain killer, and the antibiotic they sent me home with had to be squirted in with syringe. These made me gag almost every time. Disgusting. Thank the gods that is now over.

I am trying my best to stay hydrated with the water and juice, via syringe, to the back of the side of my mouth. I have tried straws, but they're not recommended, as suction is not your friend during recovery. But if careful, it can kinda work. I hate using the syringe, and I am trying to find a better way.

I am sad to report that I have lost over 20 lbs, in less than two weeks since the surgery. I am eating (drinking) what I can every day, but it's not enough. I hope to never see another "Ensure" after this.

I also had several days of depression after the surgery, wondering if I had done the right thing. My teeth were crooked yes before the whole ortho/surgery adventure, but the surgery is such a big deal, with a very long difficult recovery.... I had many thoughts about if I would do it all over again. But, as each day goes by, I feel a little better about the whole thing.

Next steps... Ortho appt next Monday to change the elastics. I hope to be able to open my mouth a bit after that. Checkup with the surgeon at the end of June.

Did any of you get your palette expanded? Or maybe not, but does anyone have sensitivity on their palette?
