Can you have SARPE at the same time as double jaw surgery?

#1 Post by Nate92 »

Hello everyone. My question is fairly self explanatory from the time. My orthodontist mentioned having minimal SARPE surgery at the same time as double jaw surgery. Minimal meaning approximately 2mm. When remembering what I had learned about the details of both surgeries though, I didn't quite understand how that could happen. After SARPE you need a palatal expander to widen the gap, and after double jaw surgery your jaws are fixed into place length-wise by screws or something of the like. How can the palatal expander widen your jaw following surgery if you're fixed into place length-wise by the jaw surgery? Wouldn't the screws prevent the widening?

Thanks!

The first orthodontist I went to wanted me to have only one big surgery to fix my jaws. The second one recommended me 2 surgery. SARPE and Double Jaw. I took the 2nd because 2 medium surgery has/had a better chance of success than one. I had SARPE and 2 years later double jaw. I don't think it's possible to have both at the same time. Although in a double jaw surgey they might be able to expand your palate without the RPE device but the chances of relapse is greater to my knowledge than 2 surgery.
