question for those who had upper and lower jaw surgery

Hi everyone,

I'm now at 6 weeks post op and I have some small questions for those who had surgery in the past.

Did you jaw pop when chewing after surgery ?

When did you start doing jaw stretching exercices after surgery or how long did it take to return to full mouth opening ?

I don't think my jaw popped but I was told not to chew anything for 8 weeks and soft food only until 12 weeks. I couldn't get the hang of chewing for ages anyway!

I was never given exercises and 6 months on I can still only open my mouth about 2cm. A few people have told me it took about a year though.

thanks for your reply. It really depend on surgeons. Mine autorized my to chew last week. I told me just not to jump into hardstuff at first like steak or softbars (which by irony are not soft). I'm already eathing plenty of things like toasts and pork chops. There is no pain at all just some popping in my jaws where the articulations are. I've read somewhere that it's happens sometimes as the articulations disks are not yet settled. I know that my surgeon told me he would give me exercices but he didn't do so yet. My next appointment is at the 3 months mark.

good news is that I find popping less and less frequent as time pass and my jaw heals. I can open my mouth no more that about 2 fingers. My midline is still shifted on the bottom jaw about 1 or 2 mm. My orthodontist was not too worried about that and told me sometimes when the jaw settles, it moves a little giving a little shift. He also said that even if my midline is not dead center it's not a big thing and is frequent. I have yet to see my surgeon. I will see both of them at the 3.5 month mark on the same day.
