Anyone in their 50's that had lower jaw surgery? I am week 7 Post Op and still have much numbness in chin and lower lip.

I'm in my late 30's and had double jaw surgery seven week ago. My chin and lower lip are still totally numb though I don't notice it that much anymore. I did have some numbness in my nose but the feeling came back after a couple of weeks. However, I think the trauma to the lower jaw nerve is a bit more substantial so it takes a lot longer.

Thanks for the reply. You went through much more than I. Why did you do it? Any regrets?

I only had to have my lower jaw brought forward 9 millimeters. I have been in braces since Nov 2010. i was cracking teeth with my overbite and between Denstist, Orto and Surgeon I got scared I would lose them all and so my journey began! I had my surgery June 27. It was pretty tough. I was very scared going into it. Several anxiety attacks the 2 weeks before and I nearly backed out. I was wired shut for a week. I lost 14 pounds in 10 days. I was released by my surgeons this past week. Went to my Ortho on Friday and he was pleased but still said I have some more movements he must make. He sent me home for 5 weeks. He wants more healing time. I have a large spot of numbness on my tongue that is frustrating the heck out of me. And of course the chin and lower lip. I have been given the okay to eat solid foods but it is very difficult. I bite my lip when I chew. At 7 weeks, I was hoping for much more progress and so I am finding it hard to stay positive. Do you have those kind of days? I am having one today so that is why I posted looking for someone to share experiences that is closer to my age. I see the posts from those younger and assume they heal faster and this is a minor thing to them. This was major for me. You?

I hope the best for you and let me know how you are doing.

I am starting to feel some tingling in my lower left lip and chin. If I lightly tap on the numb area repeatedly with my finger for a few seconds I start to feel little jolts of electric run through my gums, lip and chin. Goodness?

I can't believe it has been 2.5 months since my op. How time flies. I've had the tingling in my chin and lower lip for quite a while. It's particularly noticable when things move or when I brush against them. I'm assuming its good and that the nerves are reaching out to each other. It also feels very different to the side of my nose that was very numb immediately after the op but has since fully recovered feeling. Ultimately, though it hasn't bothered me too much. Though I've become muchmore conscious of using a napkin when I eat to make sure that I'm not walking around with food stuck all over me:-)

Geordie,

Are you still numb in your lower lip and chin? My biggest issue is biting my lip when I chew. Also, I have a very electric taste and feel in my mouth. You? Partly is because I have numbness on my tongue.
