i had a fibrous union

basically my surgeon wants to minimize my clenching at night to avoid again what has happened.
i received a maxillary osteotomy in december. my upper jaw was broken and reset backwards to correct malocclusion and improve facial appearrance. The result was very nice, but the night time grinding and clenching loosened the screws and a fibrous union of the facial bone with the upper jaw developed. This permitted movement of the upper jaw with pain. This was unacceptable and last week additional bone plates and screws with a bone graft was done.

so yeah i had a fibrous union...i really hope i heal this time...i would hate to go thru surgery again.

Wow, that sucks. I also am a huge nighttime grinder/clencher and will be having surgery soon. What steps does your doctor have you taking post-surgery to prevent this from happening again? I am definitely interested as I would like to avoid the same.

Have you consulted with another surgeon for a second opinion on your problem? If not, I'd suggest doing that before going under the knife for a third time. If it were me, I would want to know for sure, what is impeding the healing process. Don't be hesitant to ask questions. Getting a second opinion at this point is completely justified.
