Concerns about my OS!

#1 Post by queenofoverbite »

Hello- I am feeling a bit anxious about my new OS and google had yielded very few results to help me decide about the guy.

My ortho says that the guy is great and he's the head of oral surgery for two major hospitals in Kansas City.

So about 6 months before surgery, I had my original consult with him. Although we had never even spoken on the phone, let alone met, he walked into the room and exclaimed "And how have you been since the last time I saw you?" After politely correcting him, we went through my consult, etc.

While examining my jaw, he would say things like "Ok, now turn your face just a bit to the left baby girl", etc. Nothing more than calling me baby girl, but it still felt weird.

My previous OS told me I would need Upper, Lower, and Genio. This guy swears that I only need my Lower for sure, maybe Upper (he has to look at my molds more). He also says no genio is necessary and that its really dangerous because most of the feeling in your jaw/lips doesn't come back. By looking at my skin/fat around it, I truly am confused by the idea that I wouldnt need Genio.

It's never too late to change/get another opinion from another surgeon.
If you have a bad feeling about this guy, trust your instinct.

Gee, hopefully he would know who you are when you're on the operating table! I think saying baby girl is a little creepy and unprofessional. I'd go with your feeling about him. It wouldn't be a bad idea to consult with another OS.

My only concern is about getting it covered by insurance again.

My ortho is fabulous and he says the surgeon is great, I feel bad not to trust him since he obviously has dealt with the surgeon more than me. ALSO, a friend had their surgery done with him and swears the surgeon is great.

Hi Queen!

This is a REALLY tough one! On the one hand the personal recommendation from your friend and your ortho is a great thing to go by, on the other not recognising you as a new patient and calling you baby girl is unprofessional and a bit sleazy - I would have been freaked out too

I agree with the other posters who advise seeing another OS, and if you feel a bit embarrased about telling other people the main reason why (I would be!) then just say you'd like a few other opinions given the difference of opinion between your original OS and your current one. You may even find someone you prefer!

Good luck with your decision.

Hi again,

Just had another thought on this. Sometimes really clever/talented people are a little eccentric and have their own mannerisms that may seem odd to the rest of us. Maybe this is the case with your OS and he talks like this to everyone. You might casually enquire to his receptionist whether he's in the habit of calling women baby girl...

My os treat me as if i was his friend. He say hey hey i gotta show you these pictures of a surgery i've done on a patient similar case to you and he is all excited and all. But he is a very grounded man. Some doctor think they are above normal people because they save life... i know i work with some. But mine is really like you and i a human being.

I think I am going to just stay with this surgeon. His price range is good and my old surgeon was a total jerk and twice the price!

Thanks for helping to assuage my worries!

Maybe he just watches a lot of "Criminal Minds" and wishes he was Shemar Moore (I mean, who wouldn't?) :)

I think this could be the case. My chiropractor is a little strange, but he is sure great at what he does. I refer friends to him often, but give them a heads up that the doctor is a little strange. Some doctors are a bit different.

It sounds like you've decided to stick with this guy. I'm sure your otho referred you to him because he is good.

Audra, you are so funny-maybe he watches too much "criminal minds". Whenever I hear that I think of that show. I will tell you-my thoughts from the beginning when you posted this is that the OS slipped. He probablly uses that term at home and it slipped out with you. I own a restaurant and have slipped and said to a customer while serving them-"there you go "MY LOVE". I often say that to my children and it is embarrassing when you slip and say it to a total stranger. I say if everything else is ok go for it Baby Girl!-lol

haha I didn't even think about that one. I have almost said "Love you" to a client when they go because I always said "Bye, love you" to my kid when he leaves for school. That kind of slip up could definitely happen! How embarrassing.
