My surgeon forbid me from any exercise for the first six weeks, and then light exercise after that. The reason, he explained, was not that my jaw was in danger of being hit or jarred with lifting weights, but rather that my body was favoring it in the process of healing it, which meant that our bodies increase blood flow to the area in the healing process. When the heart rate increases, it pumps more blood than necessary into the area, which, in addition to being negative for healing, results in pain, swelling, and headaches. So against my will, I didn't do any activity for six weeks and started light workouts in week seven.

And then, at ten weeks, my doctor gave me the all clear for everything, including alpine skiing, which seemed rather risky but I wasn't going to question. I was out on the slopes three days later and never had any issues.
