Hi,
I recently went to see a specialist regarding my chin/jaw and he recommended I have jaw surgery as opposed to a genioplasty operation. He said that it would require 2 years of orthodontic treatment first. I was wondering if anyone knew if it were possible to do this with lingual braces as opposed to standard train tracks?
Thanks
Lingual Braces?

Hi-I had lingual braces put on for the first year and 3 months. I was told I could have the surgery with these braces and that they would put hooks on for surgery. About 3 months prior to my upper, lower and genio in July, my ortho strongly suggested we flip the braces and put on the traditional clear braces. I agreed if she thought it would make recovery easier. I still paid an additional 3000.00 for the lingual. I will say, the lingual were difficult as it felt like I had 100 ginsu knives inside my mouth. I work in a restaurant and do alot of talking so my tongue took a beating. I wished I had skipped the lingual as the assistants in the ortho office even had a difficult time working on me as they said my mouth was soooo small. Good luck with your decision but my advice is that it wasn't worth the extra money and it goes by so fast.
Hi Samus 82,
I originally wanted linguals, but my orthodontist told me that train tracks would have to go on for the surgery and recovery anyway. He also said that linguals would take longer to work, and be more expensive so I decided to bite the bullet and go for clear train tracks. This has turned out the be the right decision as none of the worries I had about them have come true, so I totally recommend the rails!
Good luck deciding

My orthodontist refused to put me in clear braces.
He said that because of the intensity/pressure involved with surgery that the clears are more prone to breaking, cracking, or snapping. I guess in his opinion only the metal was strong enough. He also mentioned that somehow because you get up to such thick wires for surgical cases that they are somehow bad for that too.
That being said, I think he's a really conservative old man.

BSSO in Fall 2010!
I have the ceramic (clear) braces and, honestly, you really have to be looking hard to notice them. I am 26 and was super paranoid about my braces standing out so I opted for the ceramics as my ortho said for my case the traditional "train tracks" would be the best option. If it's the looks that have you considering the linguals then go for the clear tracks, they do not stand out and will be all around easier to deal with, in my opinion.
Hope this helps!
