Removal off Plates and Screws to recover feeling

#1 Post by netherfield2000 »

I have a question that I wonder if you could help me with. I had orthognathic surgery twice, in April 2008 and May 2008 (relapse). My lower lip, chin and lower gums are still numb. My surgeon stated that the nerves must have been crushed during one of the surgeries. I have very little feeling in that area. I was told by another surgeon that I have Wallerian Degeneration.

The surgeon told me today that if he takes out the screws and plates located in my lower facial area, then the nerves might grow back. He said that the screws and plates might be blocking the route through the mitocondrian sheath. When I asked him the odds of this happening, he said there are no guarantee's that it may work.

I would like to know if you know of anyone in my situation with similar symptoms whom the removal of the plates and screws have helped return sensations. I am looking for any information you can provide for me on this subject so that I may make an informed decision on whether to have the surgery.

Hey

I had one of my plates taken out due to infection around it after surgery. The surgery is nothing compared to the orginal op, and i was in theatre about 45 mins (longer than usual as they had to clear the infection out.)

I was able to go home within an hour of waking up from the operation and the swelling etc was nowhere near the original op.

Sorry but i cant help with the numbness problem, but thought id give my opinion on the actual plate removal.

you mean myelin sheet?.... i'm in a similar situation here as i had a Genioplasty in May and things went wrong... left side of my lower lip and chin is completely numb... and i'm having my Genioplasty revised next month which increases the odds of never gaining the feeling back.... i've searched my options and found that a Microsurgery done by a specialized neurosurgeon could be benificial...
